Best method for cutting this?

My neighbor gave me this head off his porsche. The runner is cracked all the way around but to get to it I have to cut off this bracket. It's all stainless steel. What is the best method for cutting this bracket off without damaging the metal behind it? Reply:Pferd has a great 4 1/2 inch cutting wheel and i believe is 0.040 thick and its specifically for stainless, cuts real clean  and easy. I use it  to cut all my stainless stuff. hope this helps
Reply:First I would clean the pipe were it is cracked and get some good tacks to hold it in place before cutting off the shield. Then I would take my 3" high speed cutoff with a 1/32" wheel and cut the shield off right were the weld meets the shield. Clean and weld the pipe, then clean and weld the shield back on. Reply:Yep... I agree with the thin cut off disk on a small angle grinder.Thanks,HoboLincoln SA200's... at least 15 - 20. They come and go. Growing partial to the "Short Hoods" in my old age. Last count on Short Hoods was 13 in possession.
Reply:I agree with the posts before me. many ways to skin a cat What I would try to do is grind and wire brush as much of the old weld as I can then weld as much before I cut the bracket off. If you have a air powered die grinder with a 2in wheel they are easier to control then a electric grinder well for me anyway.

Reply:Gamble  -  Ferdinand is watching so behave.  Without question, all of the afore-mentioned, 3 x .0 thin .0 wheels are the tool to use.If I were called to do this I would start with:A 3" S/S radial brush in a die grinder to clean the coarse crude,then smooth with a radial pad, nothing abrasive.Paint the action area with Pickling Paste.  It's an ambient temp.S/S De-Oxidizer, and the active love/lub agent in manual S/S electro-polishing.  It is a hydrofluoric/hydrochloric cocktail, available at your LWS.  Neutralize and rinse.   Hydrofluoric acid dissolvesglass, so be careful.  Read the entire MSDS.Now, your clean header is preped for lay-out.  Buff with a pad, or prep again with a clean S/S wire wheel.Paint the action-area with Dykem Blue - the bluing allows you to scribe a razor line to follow with the most discrete cutting wheelyou have sourced.Until now, all you have done is prep - now comes the smart part.You must consider the last part first, which is the re-weld.The piece has to be removed to impart your repair, but the cut isnot arbitrary.The product of the cut, is not merely to separate, but to produce a mated joint, when the removed stamped gusset is returned.Your blued cut line is not in the weld, but in the stamped gusseton the weld margin.    This will allow your cut wheel to slice the gusset and clear the header tube underneath.The benefit of this tediousness is manifold:You have an unscored header tube [important to porsche purists],  the stamped gusset is nearly extant,and by placement of the cut, the original weld bead provides alap-weld shoulder for the stamped gusset to reseat.Do a few test coupons, and the new weld becomes the only weld.It is possible to remove, impart your repair, and replace this component, without a trace you were ever there.  Especially after 2000 miles of exhaust heat.Opus
Reply:I don't have a die grinder.I cut it off with the cut off wheel and made 2 welds on opposite sides of the runner and then ground down the rest and welded it around. It actually welded up beautifully. However that bracket I never want to touch again. Reply:I agree with Mechanic416.Where is the crack anyhow? I don't see any soot deposites or crack in the pic.
Reply:Look at the runner on the left side and you can see the crack. It was a lot more noticeable on the other side. I'll try to get a pic of the bracket that cracked afterward.
