Attachment 947321This is 1/4 aluminum t-joint. Pre heated a little from tack welding and about 1 minute with propane torch. 5356 rod and I used a 1/8 2% zerconiated so I put my welder to 200 amps because this tungsten taps out right at that. I used the whole 200 amps also. The one that looks like it got less penetration was welded first then right after I welded the other side. Does this penetration look poor?

Reply:the whole weld was only about 2 inches long on each side because I didn't wanna burn my 17 torch. It was already smoking earlier before this weld lol it had me a little worried. I should have laid a couple flat beads on it first to heat it up better
Reply:I think I was dragging the cup on the weld
Reply:Welded with a #4 cup at 12cfh. It took a few seconds for the puddle to form even at 200 amps with a little preheat. I wanna get a 5/32 and try it at 230 that's my max amps. I could see the ball on the tungsten drop down a little and it wanted to point my arc down. That the only thing I don't like about %2 zerconiated is it can't carry heat that well
Reply:Not too bad. Your fill is light though if the 1/4" piece is the bottom one. Top piece looks a bit thinner than that shown in the bottom. Which is 1/4"? Using the bottom piece as my gauge, if I draw a line between  1/4" up both legs and connect them, your reinforcement doesn't meet the line in either  fillet. You need more filler. You are probably pushing it with a #4 cup. A #4 is a 1/4" cup  opening and your fillet should be larger than 1/4" on the puddle size. If my math is right, your puddle should be more than twice the diameter of the cup.  I'm finding it a bit tough to see you dragging a #4 cup on an alum bead that size the way alum "piles" up when you add filler. You must have the torch at a pretty severe angle to be doing so with almost no stick out. Something doesn't seem right..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:It doesn't look like the top piece is 1/4 inch but it is. Both pieces are the Same thickness. Are legs the same meaning as the toes of the weld? I think the toes of the weld means the top and bottom edges of the weld but not sure. I'm running just under 1/8 stick out. I have been trying to get better at getting the stick out closer to the cup lately especially with the #4 cup. I have never pushed the puddle I always pull. I'm right handed and I move to the left. And I measured the width of the bead and its a little over 1/4

Reply:Thanks akweld! I think I can get better penetration with some tips tho

Reply:I add filler in front of the torch. I weld just like everyone else I could have used another 30 amps but the 2% zerconiated can't handle much.
Reply:is this what the legg means?it measured .400

Reply:Thanks alot Dave! I think I penetrated alot better then normal so that's good!
Reply:i got these 5/32 zerconiated tungstens for dirt cheap today. 6 of them for 15 bucks lol. They look pretty old!anyone recognize this old of a box or brand? I'm hopeing these weld do good. I have not got a gas lense and collect yet. I think I have been buying older 1/8 zerconiated tungstens lately because mine are brown band and most poeple sell white band sounds like. Any know about zerconiated tungstens? I like the way they weld but they can't handle much heat
Reply:Zerconiated tungsten guys? Any info about it?

Reply:1/4 inch again and I set the machine to 230 amps this time. No preheat. Penetrated alot better. But I used a 5/32 zerconiated tungsten and it was still dancing like crazy I was like wtf. Then I grinded it to less of a taper and it help alot. I'm gona go get 1/8 e3 or lanthanated and See what happens
Reply:I think I need to point my tungsten more toward the top piece to?
Reply:the discolored tungsten was dancing then I grinded the other one with less taper and it was dancing off and on. That's a 1/8 on the far right at 120 amps on ac. All are zerconiated
Reply:I run the 1/8 E3's on those 1/4 AL frames in another discussion, no preheat, 225 amps, #8 cup, 20-25cfm straight argon, runs pretty good, the tungsten does start to dance around 235-240amps (i was ****ing around with it, see how high i could bring a 1/8 E3 electrode before it popped...for research purposes of course)Miller Spoolmate 200 w/t S-52 WirefeederMM 211'09 Miller Trailblazer 302
