ok so im new to the forum and to start off ive been a hobby welder for a couple years and i just went and bought a hobart handler 140 and some 75/25 gas for this setup.  I have it all set up and when i go to weld witht eh gas on im getting porosity. ive tried to adjust the flow rate up and down and its the same. im in a garage so theres no wind and i cleaned the metal with a flap disc first.  when i release the tension on the wire and pull the trigger should i hear gas coming out of the end of the gun or would i not be able to hear it? any advice will be helpful

Reply:yes i did change the polarity on it i even double checked it
Reply:You should be able to hear the gas flowing if everything is set up right the way you are checking. Setting on the gas is usually about 15-20 CFH on average. If you don't hear gas coming out and everything is set up properly, check the high pressure side of the reg and see what it says. While uncommon, I have gotten an empty cylinder on rare occasions. Usually the valve is defective on the cylinder and it doesn't close 100% when they filled it and the gas has leaked out just sitting. Most suppliers will swap cylinders no problem if this is the case..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:i dont hear gas coming out of the nozzle and that actually did happen i had an empty one and i exchanged it today for a full one and the pressure side is around 2000 psi

Reply:Check the mig gun is installed properly. If the gun isn't in all the way, it can block the gas ports and stop flow. I've seen guys accidentally pull the gun partially out of the socket if the knob to retain it is a bit loose..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Best to confirm that gas is not coming out before you start looking for the problem. I know right off what my gas flow is with my portable gas flowchecker. I get mine here. http://www.netwelding.comWeld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:the flow is set to around 20 cfh and i will go and check to see if its seated all the way now'
Reply:that was it. it wasnt fully seated in by about 1/16 of an inch. thank you guys so much your the best
Reply:Glad it was simple.Kids at the tech school love to pull that trick on people. They'll unplug the gun just enough to block some or all of the gas and leave the next guy swapping out the heavy cylinders a few times thinking the cylinder is empty..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:yeah earlier today i did get an empty cylinder when i bought it and i just had the small 20cu ft and when i went to exchange it at my local tsc they didnt have any of the 20's in stock so they gave me a 40cu ft cylinder for free all i had to do is pay the gas difference which was only about $9 so i think i came out on top on this one
Reply:That's not bad at all. Usually my place charges me the cost difference in the cylinder plus gas to upsize. Nice if you realize later that you are going thru small cylinders faster than you thought, or if you find a smaller cylinder on CL for a "spare"..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:ok so another question if i have a cylinder can i take it to just about any welding store or shop and get it filled as i live about  15 mins from Hobart in troy ohio
Reply:Depends. Most places, "small " cylinders are considered customer owned and they will swap them no problem. However some places won't accept other cylinders. Reply:Being near Troy, you might give Weiler Welding a call.  They have facilities in Piqua and Vandalia, and a few others.  Not sure which one fills the bottles which is why I would give them a call.  I have my bottle leased through them, so I just exchange when I need a new one.
Reply:If you deal with Airgas I know they only exchange/fill bottles manufactured with the airgas stamp in themIt's simple. get a mud motor. shoot ducks in the face.
