In my possession is a wps that states 1/16" to 3/16" 3 f vertical down, tee joint qualifies for .030" to .375" sheet to sheet metal... My question is in a welder qualification test would 1/8" to 1/8" be a qualifying material to test welders on ? The material specs on the wps says 1/16" Mild steel sheet to 3/16" mild steel sheet, is this the only size material that can be used in a welder qualification test? Ive never seen a wps stating exact materials thicknesses to certify on please help
Reply:What code? Do you have a copy?Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:Yes sir. D1.3 welding info. GMAW, 3F TEE JOINT VERT. DWN QUALIFIES 1F,2F,3F VERT. DWN AND LAP PQR WAS DONE ON 1/16" TO 3/16" BASE METAL A36 P1 GROUP 1 TO A36 P1 GROUP 1 THICKNESS RANGE .0310" TO .375" CAN I CERTIFY TO THE WPS USING THICKNESSES IN THIS RANGE ? WOULD 1/8" BE OKAY FOR THICKNESS TO QUALIFY TO THIS PROCEDURE
Reply:To my (admittedly limited understanding) you are bound by the WPQR to use the stated plate thicknesses to qualify for the full thickness range. the thickness qualifies you for 1/2T to 2T .... They qualified those thickness specifically to allow the 0.0310 - 0.375" range. a 1/8 to 1/8 test plate would only qualify you for 1/16-1/4" range ... not 1/32 - 3/8" range. That is my understanding of the Code.AWS CWI xxxx21711968 SA200 Originally Posted by WelderMike I hate being bipolar, It's awesome.
Reply:That's my thoughts exactly about the 1/8" material, I'm bound to the 1/16" to 3/16" so now my thoughts are how did they get .030 to 3/8" material thicknesses ? isn't it 1/2 t to 2 t on thickness of thinnest material? looks as they used 1/2 t the thinnest material and doubled the thickest of the thickest material? I'm not seeing that in D 1.3 thanks for your help and time by the way its appreciated.

Reply:Yes sir, I got so many issues with this Wps... It was tested as a tee joint and documented as being bent 180 degrees ? for PQR test results Thank you. your a good man, Ive proposed to the customer that I believe a new WPS should be created.. But no one likes to hear they need to spend time and money to get there the right way...
