My mig/tig class is almost over. This class is the first time that I have ever welded in my life. Our instructor pretty much laid it out and said "if you can weld aluminum, you can weld anything". So I pretty much focused on aluminum only thus semester.here are some pics, and I would appreciate and creative criticism so I can get better.I'm running a Miller 200dxred tungsten 3/32120 amps110 hz65-70 cleaning5 second post flow5356 filler rodmaterial a hair over .9x Attached Images

Reply:Lol. Well ya who doesn't like to see the backside of a nice piece of shiney aluminum
Reply:#1 doesn't look too bad. You need to work on the melt thru at the end. T joint is inconsistent. Tough to tell with the flash exactly what is going on other than that. #3 You favored the near side for some reason at the start. You got progressively cooler as you welded. You need to work on the crater at the end. #4 top looks cold, #4 bottom looks the most consistent of all the ones shown. As mentioned seeing the back of the outside corners and what I assume is a but joint in #1 will tell us how well these really did. If I'm not seeing the bead go all the way thru to the root continuously, then what the top looks like really doesn't matter as you didn't get the root well.Overall from what I can see you are doing well..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:Looks pretty good man.
Reply:Fastsofa. Does your instructor recommend red tungsten? I heard that stuff spits tungsten on ac. Shovelon said that to. And the tip goes to **** right away on high amps on ac.
Reply:I chose red tungsten from weld.com, they have a handy chart. Red seemed to fit. Although I'm still VERY new to welding, from what I gather it seems to keep a point pretty good. I haven't seen it "spit tungsten". I've noticed if after grinding, and you don't grind the tip down a hair, it will curl up. Not sure if this is normal for all tungsten.I am going to purchase some Grey tipped next.
Reply:Get zerconiated. It balls nicley on its own and has a really clean arc. I have played with almost all of the tungstens. It's brown band btw. How long you been welding? Looks like maybe your going to slow and getting the piece to hot sense ur dimes are going away and getting grey. I think the top pic looks the best

Reply:What do u think of zerconiated shovelon? I have found a 1/8 brown tungsten can't handle over 200. At right about 200-210 the tip was going crazy. I would switch to 5/32 over 200. The red can handle it tho. I'd say a 3/32 red can go to 185 on acLast edited by motolife313; 12-11-2014 at 04:41 PM.
