Reply:Dont you just wrap those round the pipe and mark it off all round?? and use that then as a pattern to transfer onto the Pipework
Reply:Lol have you used them? It seems like that would be the truck but there is many different patterns not that easy???Miller Pro 300 SS w/ cat Miller Bobcat 250Miller Diversion 165 Miller 211Miller Xtreme 375Miller 12vsMiller Dynasty 200 DX Miller Passport Plus w/ Spool GunMiller 30a spoolmaticLincoln AC225 Buzz Box VictorMathey Dearman - H&M

Reply:You have to layout and mark only one side. Then reverse it to mark the other side. Yes, I've used them for about 40 years. Why do you ask?Lincoln SA200's... at least 15 - 20. They come and go. Growing partial to the "Short Hoods" in my old age. Last count on Short Hoods was 13 in possession.
Reply:I guess I just need to sit down and play with them. by reverse them do you mean flip them over  asking if anyone has use them I was just wondering if they were any goodLast edited by grindel; 09-24-2012 at 07:00 PM.Miller Pro 300 SS w/ cat Miller Bobcat 250Miller Diversion 165 Miller 211Miller Xtreme 375Miller 12vsMiller Dynasty 200 DX Miller Passport Plus w/ Spool GunMiller 30a spoolmaticLincoln AC225 Buzz Box VictorMathey Dearman - H&M
Reply:These are awesome if you use the same size pipe often. You have to have a set for every size pipe you deal with. Does not work well when working with dissimilar pipe sizes (my case 80%). Mark your center line front & rear: Use a piece of angle to mark a 6"+ line parallel with lay of pipe. Measure the circumference of pipe, then divide by half to find rear centerline of pipe, put a  small mark there, use your angle to draw your long line parallel with pipe. Now you have reference points to lay your patterns on. Many patterns only work on one face a time, so you will first mark the front face, then rotate and mark your rear face. I have written the half circumference numbers on each of my patterns to avoid redoing the calculation, but most real pipefitters (not me) know these numbers by heart. If you are going to go from a saddle to a flange, for instance, measure the shortest distance between flange and pipe, the centerline (in pipefitting, you almost always work off with centerline). Use that number, plus the thickness of the pipe to figure out where to lay your pattern(this is what they call "make-up," there will be aditional make-up on flange depending on type). Mark that place on the pipe to be fishmouthed with a wrap-a-round, then lay the pattern so that the spot you take nothing from (the pointed tips of the pattern) is on that line. It should be on either side of your front & rear lines. You can section the pipe into quarters (by dividing your circumfrence by half then 1/4) the first couple times to get the idea. I still do it on large diameters. Always double check your lines by measuring first clockwise then counterclockwise to assure they are equal distance apart.  I am not a journeyman pipefitter, I am a pipe welder. It is frustrating that no book, or instructions really lays all this out for the beginner. I am learning apprentice style, from people who just want to me to shut up, quit asking questions, and just weld.  Constant Current Weldor.
