radiator 1 orbendorfer pump

my water pump leaks where the shaft from the motor through the fan gois into the pump. is there a cheap rebuild kit? or should i save up and buy a cooler? thanks Joe

Reply:I don't know if this will help or not. I suppose it depends on what you have. Pic would be good.I'm still using a Miller M2-1 with an Orbendorfer pump from the late '50's. This one is typical of the "old tech". It has a packing behind the galnd nut on the input (motor) side of the pump. If the packing isn't ripped up, tightening the nut compresses the packing to seal. Tightening of the packing nut from time to time was/is normal as it wears. Some minor leakage is expected as this helps to lubricate the shaft so it, and the packing don't burn up. It's a graffite impregnated, chording type of material. Used to be a common hardware store item, as household faucets, automotive and commercial water pumps also used that technology. Some commercial applications still apply today.
Reply:The packing nut style was not used on the Miller Rad one unit. I am all for scrap pile for those units.   Guess it only matter is the noise and leaks bother you. If you are running straight water in a heated shop, then packing nut retro is a way to go.Seems like that's the only style you can find on line.. Reply:ya know i got my machine for a good deal. the cooler is loud, and leaks like a champ. i cant really stomach putting any $ into it. i think its time to retire. if anyone wants it shoot me a pm. i will wait and see what deals i can find on a bernard or another brand. anyone here have a extra cooler around?
