Currently making a rear bumper for my Jeep and I'm trying to notch some 2x2x.25 for the mounts. It's going inside the frame rails, but I need to notch it out so the ends are flat plate so they'll fit under the shackles bolts and gas filler tube. All I have to work with as far as cutting goes is a grinder, but it's just completely tearing my blades apart before I get anywhere cutting lengthwise. Any suggestions? The pictures below aren't my Jeep/material, but it's what I'm trying to do.
Reply:If this is what you are trying to do... well, it doesn't look hard at all with an angle grinder. I would do it using a small angle grinder and zip discs... It shouldn't take that long. Steady hand, eye protection, clamped work and do not put a lot of pressure on these discs... let them do the work.Mikel
Reply:A plasma cutter would work good for this. I did a bumper on a jeep a few years back and I did it this way. Here is a few pictures. Reply:Yeah that's what I thought as well. I've never had a problem cutting anything with this grinder or the DeWalt blades I was using but they just disappeared quick as hell on this. Used the same blades to cut the piece to length without a problem.I wish I had access to a plasma cutter, I'd have done that to begin with and it would be mounted already. Thanks for the plans too. Just seems easier to weld nuts to the inside if I cut it off completely instead of notching it. Thought about welding 1/4" angle iron to the sides of the mounts for the factory holes, but 10 mounting points inside the frame with grade 8 hardware seems like overkill as it is. |
