I've been unemployed for over a month now, and I finally got a weld test at a local company tomorrow. I went to welding school in 2013, took welding in high school, and have worked as an aluminum tig welde for a year. My test tomorrow is different though because I haven't done steel in awhile. I have 2 tests: One on 1" plate, 2g with a backing strip using spray arc Mig. The other is on 3/8" plate using pulse arc Mig with a backing strip. I'm just nervous because I have barely used pulse arc or spray arc. I focused on stick and tig welding in school. Can anyone give me advice as to machine settings, and gun positions/angles? Any advice is greatly appreciated."If you ain't making mistakes, it means you aren't learning anything."
Reply:The miler web site has a "welding calculator" that you can use to get settings for materials and thicknesses that you specify. I'd start there.Wish I could help more. Good luck.Dan----------------------------Measure twice. Weld once. Grind to size.MIG: Lincoln SP100 TIG/STICK: AHP Alphatig 200X
Reply:Miller also has an app for smartphones if you need to look it up on site, but it gives you a good starting point only, obviously not the perfect setting. I think Lincoln also has one.Relax during the test though. Being keyed up is the worst thing ever. Relax, breathe, weld.
Reply:See if you somewhere else to go practice, maybe even call up you teacher and see if you can go in and practice tonight.
Reply:Ugh man that is short notice. With only a minimal tig and stick backround that is gonna be rough. Get a good nights sleep, try not to get nervous and tweak with the machine to the best of your knowledge of what you know what a spray mig looks like before you hit your test piece. Very short notice bud and I will not mess up your head for a test that is only a few hours away. Too many variables, and hopefully they will give you weld settings that you have to stay between so you will at least have a starting point. Reply:Just give it your best shot, if they have any sense your not going to jump on a machine(one you never used) and kill it on your first try.Just relax and do what you do and you'll be all right, asked the person how he want's it done,,,,some places want you to preheat 1" plate. And go get them you'll be fine.......let us know how you make out Good luck! GH
Reply:Here are settings I used to pass the 3G pulse test. Keep in mind, just because it worked for me does not mean it will suit your style. Also if you know little about these processes the settings will mean nothing. Using a Lincoln 350MP, Lincoln L-59 .045 ER70S-6 my settings for 3G were 265ipm, 22.1 volts and 1.04 on the trim running 90/10 at 35cfh. That should be in the 100-110 amp range. This will give you a good starting point.-JonathanFollow me on Twitter @_JonathanLewis and Instagram @superiorwelding
Reply:Be honest, explain your lack of experience, offer to work a couple weeks or a month free after the test if you feel you can master the required process with some practice. At worst, even if they don't hire you, you got all that additional practice and a new skill set for future jobs.Tiger Sales: AHP Distributor www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P, Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma. Reply:Hopefully he went in gun blazing and aced it! I've learned over the years to never sell myself short!... I've done it time and time again and always end up working next to someone less skilled than me making less money than them. No more... I go in with all the confidence in the world and if they start talking Greek I tell them to show me some prints! I'm a picture book kinda guy! Reply:Thank you everyone for the advice! I did so good they want me to come back tomorrow for a tig test, which I'm confident I can handle. I thought they said this was just a visual test, but they are sending all of them off to be x-rayed, so hopefully I Passed!Edit: Oh and sorry it took so long to get back to you all, I went to sleep extra early last night then was busy all day after the test finishing Christmas shopping. Thanks again!"If you ain't making mistakes, it means you aren't learning anything."

Reply:Way to go man and just before Christmas....Congrats! And now show them they made the right choice.I hate testing. I prefer to be told day of test not before. Just saying TEST, bothers me. Great job on getting the JOB !! See it wasn't that bad !
Reply:Thanks to all of you! They said my MIG could use some work, but they had me do an aluminum test at the last minute and I passed with flying colors! About 5 minutes after I finished the aluminum test, which was just a vertical butt plate on 1/4" material with a backing strip, they offered me the job! Apparently they have a big aluminum job and need aluminum welders. I was confused why they didn't mention that after I told them all I had welded for the past year was aluminum, but I got the job so who cares!"If you ain't making mistakes, it means you aren't learning anything."
