We are currently traveling across the country, and I have a broken aluminum hinge on the screen door on our RV.The hinge failed right at a 90 degree corner.  If I were at home, I could TIG the two halves back together.  The screen door hinges (three) and the RV main door hinges (three) are held in place by a continuous rod that runs the length of the door.  But to pull the hinge pin, so that I could go get the two halves welded together, requires pulling the door off of the RV, and then pulling out the hinge pin. I'm thinking of getting a piece of 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 alum. angle and epoxy or 3m glue it back over the two broken pieces, kind of like a splint until I get back home. Maybe a couple of self tapping screws to hold it until it sets too. Which kind of epoxy or 3m adhesive would you suggest? It has to be something that they stock at Lowes or Home Depot. Would the 3m 4200 or 5200 be better than an epoxy? Thanks in advance.Last edited by WenValley; 12-19-2014 at 07:01 PM.Lincoln Precision TIG 185.Flex-Loc 150 torch.Super-Flex hose.Lincoln MIG 180.Victor Oxy/Act torch set.DeWalt Bandsaw with SWAG stand

Reply:Thanks Shovelon.  Do you think that Ace Hardware or one of the big box stores would carry that item?  I'm concerned that if I don't get the bottom hinge stabilized, the middle one will fail next.I spoke to an RV repair guy, and he wanted two hundred bucks to pull the door and remove and replace the hinge.  Yikes! At home this would be a simple fix, but on the road everything is more difficult.Lincoln Precision TIG 185.Flex-Loc 150 torch.Super-Flex hose.Lincoln MIG 180.Victor Oxy/Act torch set.DeWalt Bandsaw with SWAG stand
Reply:You may have better luck at an auto parts house.GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:@ WenValley - thanks to Mick120 from AUS, learned about Sika Constructive Adhesive earlier this year.  Bonds like the hammers of hell to concrete, ferrous, and non-ferrous apps!  Used Sika to attached severed feet for an outdoor {pot metal - yuck!} poolside table for a client project.  Worked very well.  Sika's available at Lowes."Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
Reply:Napa carries the 3m vhb tape.
Reply:ManoKai:I see that Home Depot has a SikaBOND construction adhesive in a tube for a caulking gun.  Is that what you used?  Thanks.Lincoln Precision TIG 185.Flex-Loc 150 torch.Super-Flex hose.Lincoln MIG 180.Victor Oxy/Act torch set.DeWalt Bandsaw with SWAG stand
Reply:Thanks for the heads up on NAPA.  I was all over the 3M webpage but couldn't find a distributor for the tape.Lincoln Precision TIG 185.Flex-Loc 150 torch.Super-Flex hose.Lincoln MIG 180.Victor Oxy/Act torch set.DeWalt Bandsaw with SWAG stand
Reply:Anywhere near Phoenix Az? If so you can come over and fix it for real.
Reply:Thanks Walker, I appreciate the offer.   We are in San Diego, about three miles north of the border.  I think that the tape that Shovelon suggested, or the Sikabond will hold well enough until I get home.I do appreciate the thought though.Lincoln Precision TIG 185.Flex-Loc 150 torch.Super-Flex hose.Lincoln MIG 180.Victor Oxy/Act torch set.DeWalt Bandsaw with SWAG stand

Reply:If you are going to drive north about an houryou can use my tools and dynasty 200DX and fix it right. I'm in Murrieta just off the 15.
Reply:Thank You Chief.  I used the 3M tape that Shovelon suggested.  Worked amazingly well.  We're good until I get back to the ranch.  But I have to add that I think this tape is a permanent fix.  I've never used a "tape" that took three days to cure out to full strength, it's amazing what they have, then you wonder, what does the military have that the public can't use?I appreciate your offer.Lincoln Precision TIG 185.Flex-Loc 150 torch.Super-Flex hose.Lincoln MIG 180.Victor Oxy/Act torch set.DeWalt Bandsaw with SWAG stand
