Reply:Hello all, first time member, I am looking to buy a CIG 135 Twin turbo Mig welder need to do some work on a trailer plus some semi pro work. I have used an Arc welder (did not like was a bit difficult to get a clean weld - lake of experience) before but have no background in welding,  just been doing handyman works for few years and do not mind having a crack at any project.

Reply:Assuming that your serial number starts with a 1 not an L, it is a '47, last year for the 671.  I have one of the code 671's also, built in '46, no rheostat and no auxilary power, hand crank only.  To answer your questions, shorthoods as they are commonly known, powered by the Continental engine began in '45 and continued until '56.  The first shorthood was powered by the L200 continental, more or less the same as the F162, just a different designation.  Parts all interchange. In around '48 they began to use a cylindrical brush cover instead of the cone shaped piece and the exciter covers became stamped sheet metal vs cast iron, and they ditched the lord bearing armature, made the upright supports from flat stock to the thin stamped steel that continued until the last 200 came off the line in '96.  At some point the older brass lever Pierce governor was changed to the two piece lever Pierce.  I think in '55, they enlarged the opening in the gas tank, changed the design of the grille, and added the radiator cap cover.  Lots of small design changes as the years progressed, but I've never been able to get definite answers as to when all this happened.  Then in '57, came the long hoods, then the early style red face, and the red face with blue lettering, then the late style red faces and late blue tints, then the round barrel black faces, then the hex barrel green lights with and without R-57 idlers, ect, ect...  A person could write a novel.  As far as the first SA200, 1932 powered by Waukesha, then the IXB Hercules in the late 30's to '44.Last edited by rumley3060e; 12-01-2010 at 12:24 PM.
