I am looking to build a base and manifold for my 60 gal air compressor that incorporates a couple thoughts I have. I was wanting to run a specific line that will go through a desiccant air dryer and that will be my dedicated "dry line" for operating my plasma. I was thinking that if I have a separate line this will increase air quality to the plasma as well as minimizing the amount of desiccant I will use. I would also like to mount a plate/base above the compressor that will bolt onto the plate that the compressor motor is on and have 2 hose reels mounted to it and include an extra spot to attach a short hose for blowing things off.I will include the photos of what I plan to use. I couldn't seem to find to much on the compressor manifolds. If you have links, pictures or ideas please let me know. Thanks guys! Reply:The fabricator at a factory I work at often makes manifolds out of 1-1/2" square tube. Make sure it is blow off protected, he buys weld in bungs locally, but I have found them from internet sources. An optimist is usually wrong, and when the unexpected happens is unprepared. A pessimist is usually right, when wrong, is delighted, and well prepared.
Reply:You could build the manifold with 1/2" or 3/4" pipe fitting tees , nipples , and a blow down valve . All tees vertical and blow at bottom. Then use hydraulic hoses with the same size male pipe threads to thread into fittings. Just match fitting pressure rating to compress pressure .As for base , if on concrete just use drop in anchors and isolators and set on studs. If building a base , channel works well .
Reply:If you mount the desiccant dryer farther away from the compressor and closer to where the plasma will be, it increases the length of piping allowing the air to cool more before getting to the dryer and more moisture can condense out of the air to be drained off before going into the dryer. If you angle the piping slightly upward to the dryer with a drop leg and blow down valve nearer to the compressor, you can draw off more water before it reaches the dryer, saving on desiccant use. The longer pipe will help act as an air cooler too, larger diameter pipe will dissipate more heat as the air moves through it slower than smaller pipe and causes no extra restriction to flow. You can branch off of this line for more quick connect fittings around your shop.
Reply:I would not mount the hose reels to the compressor, too much chance of tipping it over or damaging it if the hose get yanked for some reason. Mount them to the wall with at least one close to the door for outdoor projects.Yeah, I know, but it'll be ok!Lincoln Square wave 255Miller Vintage mig30a spoolgunThermal Dynamics Pacmaster 100xl plasmaSmith mc torchEllis 1600 band saw
Reply:I found a manifold I the plumbing section at Lowes.  It's meant for manifolding flexible gas pipe, but the casting itself is much thicker than black pipe fittings, and it has an epoxy coating both inside and out.  1/2" ports all around.  The blue 1/2" hose goes to a pair of hose reels mounted to the front of the shelving unit.  Garden hose fitting is for blowing out my sprinkler system and home snowmaking.  Quick connect with springy hose is just for a blow gun for quick cleaning, and the bottom valve is for a moisture collector which I forgot to empty and cracked when the garage dropped below freezing.  The dual pressure and temp gauge is used mostly for my home snowmaking... keeping track o air temp relative to ambient gives me an idea of how much condensate I'll be dealing with in my air hoses. My garage isn't really big enough to justify piping air throughout, so this works fine as a quick easy setup. You didn't build that.'85 Miller AEAD-200LE
Reply:Another quick note on air drying...If you put a line coming off the compressor, And regulate it down to ~ 100 psi, putting a section or 2 of finned hydronic baseboard radiator core inline before the dryer works REALLY Well. You didn't build that.'85 Miller AEAD-200LE
