Rescuing an old Wilton vise

Reply:Great story, cool vise and in 1946 it was American made. Nowadays, its imported from China. So, WILTON now takes on a whole new meaning.

Reply:Oh, man. I recently budged a big Wilton that was rusted beyond belief. Of course my captain hindsight self only took crappy cell phone pictures. We tried soaking it for weeks at a time, but that didn't do anything. We got it out of a container of junk years ago, and it just sat until recently. It involved a 3 ton chain come along anchored on one and and a choker holding it on another end. Add heat, and my father and myself on either side of the vice, "tapping" the head to go a little at a time, keeping steady pressure on the winch. A good honing and cleaning of everything, coat of paint, and it works beautifully. We just have no use for it.
