well, ive been browsing CL for a vice for a long time (still havent found one) but came upon this:thats a size 11 next to the vice. the drill press is a HF unit that the guy said he's had for about 10 years. 3/4 HP 16 speed 5/8" chuck.good deal for $85?thanks
Reply:hell yeah.....nice buy!
Reply:its a good drill press, I just sold my floor model for 150. if yours is like mine, it is a MT2 , I recommend a jacobs chuck. they can be had cheap on ebay.Dynasty 200DXPassport plus w/ spoolmate 100victor 315c oxy/(act and prop)Miller digital elitemilwaukee power tools
Reply:thank you. what will that chuck do for me that this won't? sorry if thats a noob question but i really don't know.
Reply:it will grab the bit better.Dynasty 200DXPassport plus w/ spoolmate 100victor 315c oxy/(act and prop)Miller digital elitemilwaukee power tools
Reply:I need to pick up a different set of pulleys for my drill press, it won't go slow enough... wonder if I could manage to get some off a broken 16 speed (or whatever) to work.Lincoln 175HD

Reply:As mentioned, the cross slides dont work for metal but I like those round mounting tables? They look like a faceplate for a lathe and they can adjust your part as good as the cross slide.
Reply:haha i think you guys are thinking too much into it. never thought about using it as a mill but now the ideas in my head lol. anyway, i'll fire it up today and tomorrow and see how it drills. he also gave me a part he told me was for the chuck taper but i'm not sure whats its used for. its a flat piece of metal about 4" long and cut on an angle. i'll try to post pics later. also, now i'm thinking about getting new bits, what do you guys recomend?about 6 or 7 years ago i got a set of "turbo max" split tip bits from my Matco dealer but some of the smaller ones have broken and maybe 2 are too dull to drill metal. i also need something that will cut through stainless easier.thanks again guys
Reply:Your flat piece of metal is a taper drift. Use it for removing the drill chuck from the quill taper or for dislodging a taper shank drill bit from the same taper.Use the drill press as a mill if you feel so inclined...doubt this year's recipient of the Darwin Awards has been selected this early.Lincoln PrecisionTig 275Miller 251Miller DialArc 250Bridgeport millHossfeld bender & diesLogan shaperJet 14 X 40 latheSouth Bend 9" 'C'Hypertherm 900Ellis 3000 band saw21"Royersford ExcelsiorTwo shops, still too many tools.
Reply:well i never really even thought about using it as a mill. you guys are thinking too far ahead haha. i'm not running a huge shop, this is just i drill press i bought for home because i've needed on a few times before. and i have a tool addiction :/
Reply:Hey Super,My observations:$85's a pretty fair deal. I think your economy in Sac is similar to Portlands, I watch your C/L all the time.Jury's still out on the cross-slide, seems like most of what I drill doesn't fit.  But, if you had to do lots of smaller production pieces, it'd be handy.Size 11 Nike flip-flops.  Dambed sure don't smell like strawberrys, do theyLincoln SA 200Esab Caddy 160Thermal Arc 201TSMiller Dialarc HFI don't like making plans for the day because then the word "premeditated" gets thrown around the courtroom....
Reply:thanks for the input. i don't think the vice was a bad deal, looks like the guy used it plenty and worked for him. like i said, i'm not running a fab shop so it should be enough for my small projects for now.
Reply:ok tried the drill out today and there is too much runout in the chuck for my liking. i checked ebay for chucks but how do you know if its a good one? i typed in jacobs jt3 chuck and a couple of them came back that look exactly like the one i already have.
Reply:^^ anyone?
Reply:A Jacobs is a decent brand for drill chucks.  They make a "ball bearing super chuck" that is a heavier duty version of their standard keyed style chuck.  Definitely get one with a compatible taper, and also get one that can hold a range of bit sizes that will work well for you (probably 1/2" max width would be OK)Albrecht is another good known brand for chucks, known for their keyless chucks.  They are very spendy though.  A quality chuck will hold the bit firmly (without slipping) and also won't contribute very much in terms of runout. If you are having runout issues, you should at least visually check that your taper is running true.  If you have a dial indicator with a magnetic base, you can measure what the actual runout of these various things is pretty precisely, by setting the magnetic base up on the table of your drill press.  If it's really bad in terms of runout, you'll see it clearly wobbling just with your eyes while it's spinning.  If you have a cheap "no-name" chuck, with runout, it seems like a good investment then to upgrade to a known brand, good quality chuck.  Even just a basic jacobs drill press chuck will be OK.  Hope this helpsLast edited by jakeru; 10-25-2012 at 12:07 AM.
Reply:thank you very much for the reply. i have a 5/8" now but 1/2" would do for me. not trying to spend a ton of money on a HF tool, just need it to make straight holes. i didn't check the runout with a dial indicator but i used a small framing square set on the table and its noticeable on the bit. i also tried different bits just incase one was bent but they all did the same thing.

Reply:You asked about bits. What follows is my opinion based on my own experience.  Others may have different opinions.I have a 118 bit set of black HSS bits - fractional/decimal/letter sizes up to 3/8.  These are usefull for most general work but are not my basic work horses, see below. The extensive size range is especially handy for selecting the correct bit for when I need to thread the hole.Always use oil when drilling.  I get thread cutting oil from the plumbing dept at the local HD.  There are other oils you can use but this is the one I like.  In a pinch motor oil will work to help save a bit from destruction, any oil is better than no oil.  There are water-based fluids that work well, but there are unique problems with many water-based fluids.  That would be another discussion. My real work horses for drilling are cobalt alloy.  Not that cheap titanium coated ones that seem to be so prolific anywhere drill bits are sold.  The coating is thin and I think more gimicky to sell bits than useful and it wears off. Solid cobalt alloy drills last longest, cut the fastest, and maintain the sharp cutting ende best.I use only standard 118° included angle twist bits for general drilling in metal, annular cutters for holes 1/2" or larger.  Split-point is OK, but I do not buy any of the self-centering or bullet pointed bits.  They are great for site contractors who need to poke a hole fast and can afford to throw them away at the end of the day.  But for me there are too many cutting surfaces to suffer damage and get dull and they can't readily be resharpened without sophisticated instruments.  Once the bullet point gets the least bit dull the bit is a useless piece of scrap.Pick up a few of these center drills readily available on ebay cheap:When starting a hole that you want to be dead-on-the-spot with minimal risk of the twist bit wandering, use the center drill to make a starter divot, then switch to the twist bit for the hole size you want.  This is more accurate than using just the tiny dimple made with a center punch.Enjoy!- MondoMember, AWSLincoln ProMIG 140Lincoln AC TombstoneCraftsman Lathe 12 x 24 c1935Atlas MFC Horizontal MillCraftsman Commercial Lathe 12 x 36 c1970- - - I'll just keep on keepin' on.
Reply:mondo, thank you so much that was really helpful. i'll take a look at some bits and reply back. as for the chuck, i believe the taper is JT3. i searched on ebay but some of the ones that came up looked exactly like the one i already have. how do i know i'm not getting a fake?

Reply:ok so i should just find a chuck then look for an arbor that fits it? i'll take the assy out today and take a look at it. thank you
Reply:Super, post up some pics of what you're doing and what you're looking at please.Regarding run-out, would a new chuck remedy that?  I would think run-out is caused by spindle bearings in the head.Lincoln SA 200Esab Caddy 160Thermal Arc 201TSMiller Dialarc HFI don't like making plans for the day because then the word "premeditated" gets thrown around the courtroom....
Reply:actually i thought that too but it felt very solid and everyone was saying the chuck i have now is junk so i went with it. :/
Reply:You may also simply have crud inside the taper. I've seen  a lot of these drills where the shanks kept slipping out. If  the shank was coated with a rust preventative like cosmolene and got some wood shavings or oily metal filings on it before reassembly, that might be part of your issue..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reaganok, just got some pics for you guys. also, if you go on ebay and type in "jacobs chuck JT3" you'll see why i was worried about about fakes. you'll see a couple that look just like what i have.
