Some of you know I recently acquired a Miller DialArc 250 AC/DC welder.  These are the first photos I have posted of some of my practice welds.1/8 mild steel stock, 1/8 Excalibur 7018 rods, all beads run various amps from about 90 to about 135.  I just changed up the amperage as I changed rods so I could get a feel for how they burned. Please give advice/comments/critique as necessary in order to help improve my skills.I really have no idea what I am doing. Two Shop Cats (not Bobcats...real cats)Miller DialArc 250 AC/DCScratch-Start TIG SetupMIG 175Plasma CutterO/A

Reply:Like others say, you need thicker metal. Get some 1/4" or even better some 1/2" plate run a bead, let it cool, run another separate bead at different amps, etc. Call out the amps for each bead, then you will get a better set of comments.ChrisAuction Addict

Reply:Ok, 1/4 plate or thicker for my 1/8 rod...got it.Would 3/32 rod be ok for practice on the 1/8 plate?  (I have access to more 1/8 plate than 1/4 in).I really have no idea what I am doing. Two Shop Cats (not Bobcats...real cats)Miller DialArc 250 AC/DCScratch-Start TIG SetupMIG 175Plasma CutterO/A

Reply:I thought you were making a hunk of 1/4 inch out of the 1/8 you started with.  When you get it 1/4 thick, turn it over for a fresh surface and start from there.John
Reply:Aside from using a thinner rod, many of those beads look cold or display lack of tie-in as evinced by a raised profile when meeting the base metal. You could stand to adjust your amperage or arc distance accordingly. That's my $0.02, with the caveat that I am not a professional welder and I may or may not have any idea what I'm talking about.

Reply:You have a good welder and good rod.  The 3/32 would be better for your 1/8 plate, but you might find that it is a bit fussier than thicker rod.  When you get some 1/4 plate, lay down a few discrete (not overlapping) beads with your 1/8 rod - just plain stringers - and post a picture, with each bead labelled with a number.  Tell us for each numbered bead what the amps setting was.  As you practice, vary speed of advance from bead to bead keeping speed constant for each bead, and pay attention to constant tip distance from the work and angle of the rod.  Tell us as much as you can about those things for each bead as well.  While it is true that sheer repetition will lead to improvement, you might find that you will get better faster if you lay down a smaller number of beads but lay them down carefully, paying attention for each bead to the values of the above variables and what effects they have on how the beads look.  -Marty-
