Hi guys,Ive been welding for about 4 years now and decided its time to invest in a decent welder. Im just a general user looking to weld steel and aluminum.  Ive done plenty of MIG and once or twice TIG aluminum welding but couldnt get it very well so was looking to get a MIG capable of migging aluminum, and if possibly tig for if I need to do some small accurate stuff. My question is; for anyone whos had a multimatic 200 and MIG welded aluminum, can I do good clean aluminum MIG welds effectively with it or will I need something more like millermatic 211 or 212?  Budget is about 2k
Reply:I had a 211. It works good enough if all your doing is little home projects. I sold mine and bought a tig machine. The main reason I sold is because the gun is only 6'... it drove me crazy having to try and position it just right every time just to get one weld. The spool mate might be a little longer but it didn't seem like it. It did real well with 4043, not as nice with 50 series wire. It did perfect with the er70 wires.
Reply:I would say either the 211 [which mine has a 10' gun not 6' ] or 252 , skip the 212 and go larger. Since the 211 came out my local guy doesn't stock the 212. It's either the 211 or the 252.
Reply:Big advantage the 212 is going to have over the 211/ multimatic 200 is duty cycle. If you need to do a lot of welding in the higher volt range, a bigger cabinet style mig is going to be to your advantage. I'll agree going bigger wouldn't hurt as far as output power if you are moving up to a full size cabinet style mig..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:I use a Multimatic when I dont want to drag out the Lincoln 350MP. Had a big project last two weeks and and punished the Multimatic. I ran 8 one pound rolls of 4043/.035 through it without a problem.
Reply:Did yours come with the 10' lead?

Reply:Came with a 10' lead and weld quality is excellent. Doesn't run 5356 for some reason. I tried it and it with disappointing results. Looked inside the case that has a chart and 5356 isn't listed as a consumable...only 4043.
Reply:Most dual-voltage welders do not have enough output voltage to use 5356 wire properly. The Lincoln 210MP lists both 4043 and 5356 in its capabilities. I have not tried either myself as I don't have a spool gun.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
Reply:While still learning to mig aluminum, I bought a 212 auto set with the spoolmatic 30A gun and LOVE IT!!
Reply:Thanks for the info on 5356. I probably would have considered another machine had I done my homework. I can get by with 4043 or fire up big guy!
