My old shorthood is missing the starter and all the goodies that go with it.  I am wanting to put a starter back on it with a single wire alternator but cannot find a simple wiring diagram to follow. Does anyone have a simple wiring diagram that I can use for this? Please remember that you are dealing with an electrical 'tard!StephenMillermatic 251Miller Syncrowave 200Miller 30A SpoolgunHypertherm Powermax 30Etc., etc., etc.............Cancer Sucks!

Reply:Shouldn't the starter button be completing a circuit when it's pushed?  This diagram shows it at the end of one wire.StephenMillermatic 251Miller Syncrowave 200Miller 30A SpoolgunHypertherm Powermax 30Etc., etc., etc.............Cancer Sucks!
Reply:Sorry about that, I should have given you these! This is how I wire mine. Attached ImagesDon’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:I believe I can work with that!  Thanks.StephenMillermatic 251Miller Syncrowave 200Miller 30A SpoolgunHypertherm Powermax 30Etc., etc., etc.............Cancer Sucks!
Reply:With that 2nd diagram the worst that can happen is you'll wire the amp-meter backwards. If its discharging reverse the wires.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:I don't like the preferred method. One of several functions of the "1-wire" is to sense battery voltage, so that the  alternator's internal regulator can maintain ideal battery charge. Well, if the 1-wire is connected as directly as possible to battery Pos, then the battery state will  be most accurately sensed. However, if the 1-wire must sense battery voltage through the ammeter and at the "T" were other loads may connect, then the  signal may be lower than actual battery voltage and the regulator could then call for an overcharge.Probably still workable with light loads, but I wouldn't think it'd be "preferred."I'd suggest to connect to Pos at the starter cable, and if there's a need for a meter, replace the ammeter with a voltmeter.Voltmeter gives a better indication of system status anyway.Good LuckLast edited by denrep; 12-28-2010 at 09:50 PM.
Reply:Keep in mind as well that you'll probably have to goose it to get the alt charging. That's one reason I wanted a three wire for my tractor, you can excite it rather than have to rev up the engine to get it started.....Mike
