I want a liquid cooled, low rev diesel welder. I want a smooth running motor that is quiet and doesn't rattle things on my deck. Which motor is the one to get out of Kubota or Perkins?I am not brand biased and have heavily considered red and blue but think the vantage 400 will fit the bill for me. I am willing to listen to the other side though. My Need/want listSuperb arcMust burn diesel Quiet and smooth as possibleAC Power for: drills, mag drills, microwave, coffee potArc control / dig No darn range taps pleaseBig AC power for plasma or pulsed mig systemCV for fluxcore and hardwire5/16 air arc (can settle with 1/4)Oh, and did I say good arc? I want it to weld silky smooth (and I mean the top quality silk). What machine is for me? I wish lincoln would make a machine that has vantage 400 with air compressor and plasma built in (heck maybe even pulsed mig). I would buy that.Last edited by feetfats; 12-24-2010 at 01:39 AM.
Reply:May want to find a Lincoln rep and talk to him and tell him what you are looking for in the engine.  He should be able to give you a non-biased opinion on the engine since he represents the welder and not the engine. If I were to choose for myself I would probably opt for the Perkins, and that's not to say that the Kubota is not as good. From what I here from others the Perkins is a quite engine and the quality is certainly there.StephenMillermatic 251Miller Syncrowave 200Miller 30A SpoolgunHypertherm Powermax 30Etc., etc., etc.............Cancer Sucks!
Reply:Kubota parts are $$$ one of my lincolns have one, runs good, starts easy even when cold. It also is very quiet! My skid steer has a 44HP Perkins, she runs like a champ and NAPA has almost every part I have needed. Just a little hard to start when cold. Its older, loud and shakey Good luck.Last edited by jreynoldswelding; 12-25-2010 at 07:51 PM.You have to learn the rules of the game. And then you have to play better than anyone else. Reply:It's tough because they are both excellent motor manufactures.
Reply:I've got both.  4 of my machines are Air Vantage 500's with the Perkins, 1 is a Vantage 500--no air.  I have one little lincoln 300 with the kubota, it runs nice and smooth but I think I prefer the Perkins engines.  I also have 4 of the little Miller Pro 300's with the perkins engines in them and they are great too.6 Miller Big Blue 600 Air Paks2 Miller 400D6 Lincoln LN-25's4 Miller Xtreme 12VS2 Miller Dimension 812 4 Climax BW-3000Z bore welders Hypertherm 65 and 85Bug-O Track BugPair of Welpers

Reply:Perkins is now owned by caterpillar so they are one in the same not saying that anything is wrond with them. I have seen acouple of millers with cat engines on there with engine failures with around 4 to 600 hours on them. I would go with kubota I have a kubota tractor and it starts right up no matter how cold and sips fuel. My pro 300 with the perkins is more cold natured but still fires right up and has just over 2000 hours on it. I wouldn't be affraid to go with either one used but I would buy a kubota if I had to choose new.Vantage 300 kubota ,miller 304 xmt ,lincoln ln 25 pro , ranger 305 G, plenty of other tools of the trade to make the sparks fly.

Reply:My buddy parted out a Sullair compressor with a CAT (Perkins) engine. It had I think around 2000 hrs. I forget the parts needed, but they were not available. I wouldn't touch a Cat / Perkins, just my opinion!"Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
Reply:Lemons come in all colors,...But as far as comparing small diesel engines,..there is NOTHING on planet earth that will last as long,..or run as nice ,and effecntly as a   KUBOTA,    OF course my sig has nothing to do with my opinion........
