So, I finally got my new welder Miller 325 TB EFI excel and now I need to build a table.  I was going to keep this one fairly simple but wanna run by you all what I had planned to see if you might add in your 2 pennies on things I should incorporate or change.  I want to keep this build on the "not to fancy but long term worthy" side so not any $$$ ideas because you will just tempt me and get me killed by the dungeon master.Top 4x4 x 1/2 inch 35 to 36 inches AFF3-1/2 x 3-1/2 by 1/2 inch angle iron vertical legs (already have this in scrap pile)4x4 by 1/4 inch top frame that supports the table top (in my scrap pile as well) Is this heavy enough1-1/2 x 1-1/2 11 gauge angle iron lower supports set horizontally between the legs down low (8 inches or so aff)I was planning on placing some expanded metal I already have laying around as a shelf on that lower section.  I will place some additional bracing under the middle section to support the expanded metalI had planned on setting the supporting from in from the plate top about 3 inches all the way around to allow for edge clamping options.  Is this a good dimension?I was also planning on putting flat plates on the bottom of each leg to allow for shimming in my temp shop to make it level and then allow me to wedge anchor it to the concrete in my permanent shop.  Other then that this was my basic plan...I was going to weld a couple studs at an angle to hang my extra flap wheels and such and maybe put a stinger holder but had not figured anything else.  Oh yeah, as soon as i track down a nice used wilton vise I would like that in one of the corners to.  Input, creative ideas?  Would kind of like to order metal for his in the next couple of days if possible and tinker around this weekend.
Reply:Was actually thinking it might be smarterer to switch the table top support and legs around having the 4x4x1/4 being the legs and the 1/2 inch angle iron supporting the table top horizontally.  ???
Reply:One thing I would'nt do, is weld the top to the base frame, find a way to mechanically attach the topLast edited by Randall_H; 03-07-2016 at 10:00 PM.

Reply:Have you got the top or are you ordering it? If ordering check the price difference between 1/2 and 5/8  I think you would like the 5/8 better in the long run than 1/2" Like you said switching the tubing and the angle would be a good thing to do.Klutch 220si mig , stick, and dc tigHobart 140 AHP ALPHA 200X 2016Lotos LTP5000DSmith O/P
Reply:I made a slat top, using 3/4"x6", no real flex detected in 24" span with 3" overhang. it was about the same cost, maybe slightly less than equivalent 1/2" sheet and easier to handle in 60" lengthsHobart Handler 210 MVPAHP AlphaTIG 200XHypertherm Powermax 30 Air
Reply:All of my new work tables have 5" and 6" casters, makes my life a lot easier. Just my two bits. John

You can then remove it when you don't need it, or install it when you do. You will also be able to use other bench mounted tools in the same way. Consider mounting several of the receiver tubes for multiple attachment points and tools. Many on here have done the same thing with their table.
Reply:Originally Posted by TDog78Just went down to my local steel supplier about an hour ago and I was inquiring about tube for that exact reason and he sells 20 foot stick of that exact material.  I was thinking of leaving all four corners open to accept and kind of accessories and adding a few more.  I would like to make a drop table to stick in the slots to hold my chop saw and like you mentioned a vise.  Only thing that concerned me about the vise was how much play it might have in the receiver tube.
Reply:Originally Posted by BistineauIf your concerned with the play in the tube, drill a 1/2" hole in it and weld a 1/2" nut over the hole and use a 1/2" bolt as a set screw to hold it tight. Here is what I did for my chop saw, like you mentioned. The plate is large enough to rotate the saw 45* and still keep the stock laying on the table for making miter cuts.

Reply:This is what I built  the top is out of 1/2" crs  with removable slats that can be extended  out to make the table 5 ft wide. Planning to make extension for the ends too.Klutch 220si mig , stick, and dc tigHobart 140 AHP ALPHA 200X 2016Lotos LTP5000DSmith O/P
Reply:A small table with a slat top will do fine.I use drill press clamps to hold stock.A small vise on one end can be used for clamping. My table is 2x3.If i need more room Ill use saw horses and planks.
Reply:My suggestion: make sure you have an area for storage below. If not, you'll end up being able to only use half of your table because the other half will be covered with stuff (clamps, squares, BFH, grinders). I have a 5' X 10' table at work. When I use it, I get to use the whole thing as it has storage underneath. When my boss uses it (rarely), it turns into a 2' X 3' table because he puts everything and anything on top of it while working. At home I have a 4' X 6' table with 2 storage shelves underneath and my top is always clean and empty except for my work piece.Big F**king HammerJumper cables & 2 marine batteriesJaws of life
