Hello I've been looking for a tig welder within a small budget, and found someone selling an idealarc tig 300 for $700. Says it works using dc. But can't figure out why it won't work on ac.Any ideas what could be the issue. Is the machine cheap enough to risk it being a cheap easy fix? Any sure tell ways what the problem could be? Thanks

Reply:The guy said he has to lift start on dc. On ac he can get a little spark but that's it and the inside the machine has a ticking noisr

Reply:I give that for a working Tig 300.

Reply:I was thinking it could be points. Would anything else cause the problem?

Reply:If there's no AC output at all, its going to be a lot more involved than a point adjustment.Switching the HF OFF first, and putting the machine in PANEL, then testing across the output studs with a good meter for open circuit voltage is going to be the best bet for confirming if it has AC output or not. If you get no output, leave it there. HGR surplus in Cleveland, OH had like three of these machines on their site last week for under $700 each and you get a 30 day guarantee and option to return for a full refund if it's junk. The price isn't bad, but it's not great either. I have no clue where you're located and location plays a part in machinery values, but I've bought and sold quite a few of these machines and never paid over $500 for one, complete with a pedal and torch, etc.Personally, I would be investigating the output issue before anything else. You should get around 70-80 open circuit volts (nominal) in all five ranges on the tap switch in both AC and DC with the machine set up for stick welding. If it checks out in AC & DC, the HF issue could be as simple as points, it could be as complex as a smoked HF high voltage transformer, capacitors, lack of input to the HF circuit, etc. Again, for what the guy wants for it, I wouldn't wanna wrench on it at all. Maybe for a few hundred bux I might, but that would be tops.Reasons for no AC output however, could be numerous, and all of them a complete deal breaker at that price.IMHO of course.Last edited by 7A749; 03-29-2016 at 08:50 PM.Expert Garage Hack....https://www.facebook.com/steven.webber.948
