Anyone ever heard of a Lincoln Electric "Plasma 20" plasma cutter?  Neither did I, but when I opened this weeks Canadian Tire flyer, there it was!  For those not living in Canada, Canadian Tire is a nationwide retailer of tools, hardware, small appliances, sporting goods, etc.Being in the market for an affordable light-duty plasma cutter, I was intrigued.  I went to Lincoln's website (including the Canadian website) but could not find this new item.  It seems that Lincoln currently only sells three plasma cutters (the ProCut line).  This isn't surprising as I've seen other items sold through Canadian Tire that are not available from Lincoln (for example, the Lincoln MigPak 140).So, apparently this is another of those knock-offs, made by whomever (hopefully not a cheap Chinese piece of @#$%), that Lincoln has added it's name to for the purpose of mass-marketing through these outlets.  I did some searching and see that Home Depot and Sears are selling the same unit (but labelled as the Lincoln Electric "Powertorch" and Lincoln Electric Powertouch, respectively).  I put the links below if anyone is interested.Does anyone know if these items are the same quality as the "real" Lincoln items- i.e. are they actually made by Lincoln or are they made by someone else and Lincoln is just choosing to let their name be attached to them?http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00947541000Phttp://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/brows...a%2BCutter.jsphttp://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/...01644+10401022Lincoln AC225 & MigPak 140, Lincoln Magnum SpoolGun, Miller Spectrum 375-X Plasma, Syncrowave 200 TIG, Millermatic 252 MIG, Miller Digital Elite, General 7x12" horiz/vert bandsaw, 3' box/pan brake, 20 ton press, milling machine, 12x28 lathe, etc.

Reply:Why would anyone even look at that 20A Lincoln plasma, when they can get a Hypertherm PM 30 for just a few dollars more? The Powermax is a much more capable unit and we all know it's made right here in the US.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.
Reply:It's also in the new Princess Auto Catalog.I can't find it on the Lincoln site.  ?????
Reply:I would be wary if it is sold only at Crappy Tire. They sell a lot of sub par import crap, rather than the decent import crap available everywhere else.Bob.Miller Dynasty 200 DXMillermatic 211Hypertherm PM 600In Tool acquisition Mode

Reply:He's right- "Canadian Tire" does sell a lot of crap.  98% of their house brand (Mastercraft) is absolute garbage- cheap, poor quality, Chinese-made garbage disguised as tools.   As for the "new" plasma cutter, my local CdnTire store is now stocking this item.  While there is no floor demo-model, the empty box is there to examine.  And, despite bearing the Lincoln name, from the photos and description, this instrument verily SCREAMS cheap imported knock-off.  My guess is that Princess Auto's model is the same one.  Interesting that this tool "appeared" at both stores at the same time.   Makes me wonder why Lincoln wants to allow their "good name" to be attached to these things.  I guess they're willing to sacrifice a bit of reputation to tap into the cheap tools market.  Someone with an MBA or PhD probably decided it was for the best.  There's certainly no shortage of people lining up at CT or Princess to buy lots of cheap crap. (Just thinking about PA's "PowerFist" line makes me want to vomit).  For the Americans, I think these stores compare to your Harbor Freight in quality.  SundownIII is correct- for the price of this Plasma Cutter, it's not worth it.  Even locally, just pennies more at one of the welding stores will get you a Miller Spectrum or one of the REAL tools.Lincoln AC225 & MigPak 140, Lincoln Magnum SpoolGun, Miller Spectrum 375-X Plasma, Syncrowave 200 TIG, Millermatic 252 MIG, Miller Digital Elite, General 7x12" horiz/vert bandsaw, 3' box/pan brake, 20 ton press, milling machine, 12x28 lathe, etc.
Reply:why buy a machine that only 115 when theresothers out there that are 115 & 230 for the same price
Reply:I pulled phone number from docs that came with my 180...Called Ohio - this is genuine Lincoln product. There is operating manual, product number and everything... It's just this is really small unit so not on main page.... Up to 20A 3cfm with pilot arc, 1/8"... And NOT cheap too... Say PowerMax was quoted for me1600 this one 1200... Yet in Canadian Tire on sale $700....Last edited by Nomand; 12-03-2009 at 03:28 PM.
Reply:And just a couple of coal rocks into the furnace...For this kind of money - Chinese will be more than 50A... For 1/2 at least...
Reply:So.. I've never used 'Can tires' plasma cutters but I've owned a mig pak15 lincoln wire feed 230v. I understand its synonymous with the SP series in Lincolns catalogue. It must be a marketing deal canadian tire cut with lincoln; and I believe its genuine Lincoln.  I've had my little buzz box since 2002 paid 650CDN$ . I've replaced the cable with a teflon cable to do alum without a spooler....I've done SO MUCH work with it. For what it cost, it fkn awesome. Drive motor is a little weak sometimes if 10ft cable is ratbaged n twisted. I can produce a very convincing TIG like appearance with the NR-211 mp flux core for 70k steel, I have a Syncrowave to compare to. On E or D setting I can easily weld 1/2 plate with multi pass. I've taken it to cantire once for servicing cuz drive wasn't working, just loose wire clips, rub on for clean metaln put some anti ox goo on.  Since 2002 Ive burnt one circuit board last year got a new one from lincoln 170CDN all told.....no more alumium heat sink, musthave updated so no heat build up.sweet!  Ecetera ecetera.  Mastercraft chizels and socket sets are GOOD,         most of rest is crap. I'd vote the plasma cutter will be as good a non. Canadian tire marketed Lincoln.  But what do I know? Check warrantyn they may have changed since 02'
