I have a gun. It has a hair crack that opened one of the welds. It may or may not be one of the original welds, but I suspect it is original because it looks like the gun has a factory parkerized finish. What sort of prep needs done? It's about 16ga sheetmetal and the crack is so tight that there's no good way to get into it for prep. It's so tight you can only see it when putting some flex on the metal. The inside corner of the joint probably cant be done either because there's just no room to get back in there... it will all have to be done from the outside. I was thinking of just running a torch over it to fuse it with no filler. Picture of gun receiverPicture of back welds (left one is cracked)Flexing the crack open:
Reply:is that one of those make at home receiver kits?

Reply:I'd find a guy who is really good with a TIG welder as a torch may change the heat properties of the steel too much.
Reply:Must be like making a house payment every time you take that thing to the range  I can go thru a few hundred rounds in a heartbeat with a REVOLVER "Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:It only shoots 1200 rounds/min but I still excercise self control and only load 25rnd per mag or else I'm out of ammo before I know it. drujinin, do you think a no filler fusion bead would impart that much heat? I was thinking like very sharp 1/16th electrode at 50A or so with a little swirl movement or something. What I wasn't sure on was the effect of a parkerized coating and the fact that I can't clean the crackh out. Maybe some liquid flux like stay brite?Last edited by joeymac; 03-31-2016 at 11:37 AM.
Reply:only 1200...?only 20 rounds per second...?I honestly can't think of any gun that's faster...Welding/Fab Pics: www.UtahWeld.com

Reply:Parkerizing is a zinc or manganese phosphate coating typically. Looking at the color I'd guess yours is zinc.  While I've never welded over a parkerized surface, I'll bet the zinc phosphate is going to play he11 with your welds just like galvi will. You are probably going to have to grind/ remove the finish in the area you want to weld for best results and no contamination of the welds since tig tends to be very unforgiving of surface contaminants..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:Having made some similar type repairs to things like this in the past my guess is that it will tig weld OK.   I'd use one of those ss wire tooth brushes to brush where I was going to be welding just as good as I could.   I'd also want to have some small diameter (.030 or .035) 70S-x wire in hand ready to add as needed.
