OK you grind of the galvanize before you weld but it seems that something remains when you go to weld.Anyone have any thoughts on this???
Reply:Your not grinding enough of it off. I was on a job splicing galvy sheet pile for 9 months once.... got sick twice from it. Grind a nice wide swath of whatever your welding. Galvy fumes are very toxic as you probably know. Pics?
Reply:sometimes when grinding wheel plugs up w/ galve and its thick, I take a 6010 rod, hold a real long arc, trying not to deposit filler to the workpiece, and the galve will pop off in flakes.    then take the grinder and clean off the dingleberries from the 6010.    it seems the galve itself is highly conductive.  it works real well actually
Reply:Fume extractor, respirator, and either flux-core, or 6010.....MIg and 7018 are no fun....Last edited by AKweldshop; 01-14-2015 at 10:29 PM.Just a couple welders, big hammers, grinders, and torches.Work will free you.Men in dirty jeans built this country, while men in clean suits have destroyed it. Reply:No respirator and welding any amount of galvinize= trip to hospital...no what if's and but's about it. Been there and don't want to be back!                                                   GH
Reply:Hmm.....if I were stranded on a deserted island and could only choose between galvanized steel or plastic lined oil field tubing to weld until I was rescued which would it be???

Reply:Best wire I've found to run on galvanized material is Hobart's FabShield 21-B. Working marine construction most of my life I would get steady diets of welding galvanized material. Pier 69 downtown Seattle, and the Alaskan ferry terminal in Bellingham are both galvanized pipe pile with all galvanized beams. We never took the time to grind the galvanized off, just blast right through it.  Attached ImagesDon’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:CEP, looks like '' KATE '' is the smart one .   Reminds me of me welding in a ditch , wet , cold, and shllty, with my faithful partner on top drinking coffee. We just use 6010 and burn through it. Only mig we did was on unistrut 10 gauge and burned through it too. It kinda depends on how much galvanized is on the material.

Reply:Welding on galvanized is not a big deal as long as you are outside IMO.  Myself and my employees have welded plenty of it and as long as you are careful it's not a big deal.  Grind all the way down to clean steel and weld it up.  Hit it with a  little cold galv compound and you are golden.
Reply:[QUOTE=BD1;5267601]CEP, looks like '' KATE '' is the smart one .  [/QUOTEActually Kate was a very good girl. She would do anything you ask her to do. I worked on several jobs with her. And she worked for me on a couple jobs. One job she was running a capstan with 1 1/2” Polly plus rope. The rope jumped over it's self, and she reached to grab the rope. Cut all her fingers off of one hand! I had to run her to the hospital. They sewed them all back on. I heard Kate died about 20-years ago from breast cancer!  Originally Posted by RoadhunterHit it with a  little cold galv compound and you are golden.
Reply:CEP, What type of wire did you use on the gate welding you did for me, on the thin wall 2" electro-galvanized tube?  Was it the same .045 212 innershield you used on the 1/4" angle bracket in the shop? ?   Or the hobart Fabshield21 B?
Reply:Same wire in both locations. .045” NR-212. But next time remind me to throw the switch inside the LN-25 to VV when I use an SA-200. You're suppose to keep an eye on me! Reply:I welded some structural galvi today at work. It had to be done with 7018. I used my die grinder to remove as much of the galvi as I could. I find you can never get it completely removed. The first pass with 7018 will spit and pop a bit as it burns off the residual galvi but the next passes go in smooth with no issues.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720

Reply:im struggling with it myself right now with stick! all hot-dipped, kind-of structural if there is such a thing. i have to do it all with 7018 and it sucks!i grind off what i can (1/8" wheel on edge works well), but most joints i cant because boss wants it welded yesterday. causes the rod to fingernail really bad and only wants to stick to one piece or the other, then when i force to the other piece its sparks galore and undercut from the material that just rolled down my arm. after that though, the next two passes to cover it up go in finebosses stuff:trailblazer 325maxstar 200my stuff:sa 200fronius transpocket 180100 amp Lincoln w/f97 f350 DITKevin
