Hello all! I'm looking for tips to avoid the crater at the end of a tig weld. I weld stainless steel pipe on a syncrowave 350. 1/8 rod, around 90 amps, number 7 cup. the "dig" functions goes up to 10. I'm around a 2.I always end up with a small crater where I finish up the weld. I end up "arc striking" it a few times until it's washed away before I finish up.Any tips to avoid a crater? My tig torch is an on off switch. I usually just click it off and let it post flow. Thanks
Reply:Turn your post flow up a bit. What is your regulator set at?
Reply:I believe it is around 45
Reply:That is plenty...id turn that down to 30ish. Set your dig 4-5
Reply:Ok I'll give it a whirl tomorrow. I'm taking it that the gas is what's blowing hole?
Reply:Yea..sometimes too much covering gas is not a good thing. Id say get a foot pedal so you can let up slow.
Reply:i think they call that a fisheye.    I think one of the reasons is it's a lil to hot when you quit your arc.    If you had a petal or a way to turn your amps down at that point, i'd think it would help.    i usually don't even have a shut off switch, so I walk it backward a bit, real fast like, and lean it back to lift out of puddle on one side, but lift only enough to break the arc, but still keeping gas coverage on it sort of.   I'm not real good at it.   Sometimes it works well, sometimes it don't.
Reply:Why do you need 45 cfh? Do you have a real long tungsten stick out ?
Reply:Yes I have found tapering off on the amps slowly helps alot. But doesn't so like you can do that
Reply:It sticks out maybe an 1/8 or 3/16.45 is just where it has always been since I started the job  I just rolled with it lolA guy I work with likes it that high when welding quarter inch thick aluminum vessels so I never fiddled with it.But I will drop it a bit tomorrow to try it out
Reply:Wish I had a foot pedal! LolI see a lot of scratch start guys pop off real fast at the end. (Fieldres for example) Wonder if that helps.
Reply:You could probably drop it to 15-20 cfh. I usually use 10-13 or higher depending on cup size and stick out.

Reply:On the root and fill pass, do you slide over on to the bevel, gradually long arcing, till you see the puddle solidify, then break off quickly? On the cap, I'd run a little cooler, then at the end, run past the overlap, without feeding wire, speed up, so you don't maintain a puddle, then break it off.
Reply:Hold your stop and add a little more wire swirl it around and then break the arc fast.  If your walking the cup, slow down at your stop and add some rod then speed way up go past your stop and break the arc fast.  If you have a pedal just slowly let off while moving the tungsten away from the center of your stop.  Just my opinion.
