HiI plan on welding mild steel to mild steel motorcyle wheel fender in the gtaw process, i talked with some old timers and they suggested i use stainless 316l instead of er70s2 our 70s6. Is this true? I have allot of 316L  rod.
Reply:stainless on mild steel??   not where i come from anyway..if you were building a chassis for a drag car and used stainless on mild steel... you'd fail inspection every time...its not even the same "color" .. save the headaches and stick with 70-s ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Will it stick it together?  Heck yeah!Is it not only NOT the best weld for the material, but also needlessly more expensive?  Yep...A real PITB to grind, too.Tell you what.  Send me your 316, and some shipping money and I'll trade you pound for pound for some ER70S-2 or S-6, your choice.
Reply:The reason 316 stainless steel filler should NOT be used in welding steel is that the mixed chemistry of the weld pool is likely to become highly hardenable and result in a brittle weld.  As the carbon content of the "mild" steel is raised, the likelihood of a problem is increased.  The following formula will allow you to estimate what level of carbon in a plain carbon steel would match the hardenability of the mixture of stainless steel and mild steel you are talking about.  For example, maybe the weld is 60% 1030 steel and 40% 316 SS, and by the formula you may end up with a weld equal to 1050 steel, that would a problem without pre-heat and post-heat.http://www.esabna.com/EUWeb/SA_handbook/585sa3_1.htmhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equivalent_carbon_contenthttp://www.thefabricator.com/Metallu...cle.cfm?ID=685In general, as the formula will show, it is ok to us 309 SS in welding dissimilar joints such as low carbon steel to 300 series stainless steel.Hope this helps.
Reply:Several years ago I used a filler rod (tig) called Eutectic 680.  It was supposed to be the best for welding two different kinds of steel.  It was very expensive stuff.  Later on I was at the weld store and asked if there is an equivalent filler rod and the man came up with some stuff called super missile weld.  Anyway the stuff welds really nice and it must have stabilizers in it because It was great on everything I used it on.
Reply:i've used "super missile weld" in the 1/8 size on a stick weldernice nice nice......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:309, 310, and maybe 312? are the only stainless fillers recommended for joints involving mild steel.  They can also be used on cast iron.  There is no reaosn you should use one on a joint that doesn't involve stainless, though.  It's expensive and yields a joint of unkown mechanical properties.

Reply:Thanks yall for the replys.  I guess Ill use 309 i have allot of stainless Tig rods and dont have any Mild steel ones rather just use the ones I have in stock if they work good, all of the old timers said its what they reccomend.Last edited by All positions; 04-28-2006 at 03:48 AM.

Reply:Frankly, nobody impresses me by using the WRONG filler material, just because they have it .If you're actually serious, i guess you can find someone nearby, that will give you the correct  steel rod ,like 2 pounds steel for one pound S S .[SIZE="5"Yardbird"
Reply:That's just the difference between a wannbe and a welder. Funny considering I am an old timer and I would never recommend it. For that you can use mild steel O/A rods. Hell a coat hanger would give you a better weld. BTW I ride an antique Harley which I purchased new and I would never do that on it.The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
Reply:This thread was linked over to the miller site. Even tho it is old I will comment on it.One reason not to use the stainless filler here in this application is painting it may be a problem.Miller Dynasty 700Miller 350P with Aluma-pro push-pullMiller 280 Dynasty with expansion card Dynasty 200 DXMigMax 215 Enuff power and hand tools to create one of anything..... but mass produce nothing!!!

Reply:Wow it's  been nearly 10 years since i started this thread! I would've slapped my old self in the head for thinking such a dumb idea! And to they guys poking fun at me. Yes I deserved it. I was fairly new to the trade then and haven't quit.  Though i ended up using 70s 035 wire spool that I dug out of my trunk.
