Well I've been semi active before, when I was laid off before and half *** tried to do a welding business, I made good money but never invested in it as much as I should've, and gave in for a woman and took another job and moved closer to her. Eventually that ended and case called me back to work.So with six years seniority at the case New Holland plant in Fargo, ND, I quit and moved all my stuff 700 miles to Mitchell, NE. I closed July first on a 19,000 sq ft shop with 2600 sq ft of it an apartment. I'll show some pics in this thread of old projects and stories of things that have brought me where I am today. I'm doing this on my phone so it will have to be in pieces, I get annoyed typing on it. Here are some pics of the shop. Attached Images
Reply:A lot of the stuff is the previous owners we are waiting for him to get out, he ran an engine shop. Before that it was an auction house. Last picture is from my first big job down here, six days of work welding bunks back together and fence at a feedlot. Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2 Attached Images

Reply:Some more from the feedlot. I didn't take a lot of pictures, was welding pretty solid. Attached Images
Reply:Did a project for my old man, the wood on the center of this drop deck got all chewed up and broke loading the excavator and he wanted metal in the middle, 1" x 3" to fill the gap and then he has some lasered sheets of 3/16" that he got from an auction or something. Attached Images
Reply:Last pictures for the night. While I was moving I worked for an outfit in ND that I know the owner, runs a demolition outfit, that paid off because I will have work from them down here, should have some nice winter production work for them, will be building a skidsteer attachment for them tomorrow. Replaced the adapters and cleaned up and repaired a rock bucket for an excavator, made a weight for them they needed for government jobs, actually made two, and fixed and converted a roll off box to hold a fuel tank that would meet epa standards. I did a bunch of other jobs too but these are the ones I had pictures of. Attached Images
Reply:I guess I didn't have a completed picture of this roll off container but I had to weld an entire new floor in, needs to hold twice the amount of volume as the fuel tank that goes in there. Attached Images

Reply:It is made to hold a fuel tank and a hook truck will pick it up and deliver it to the jobsite. I'm not sure if they will be hauling it with fuel in the tank or get bulk delivery at the jobsite.

Reply:Nice looking shop. Congratulations!
Reply:Yes that is a old Sun distributor machine, the previous owners stuff waiting for him to get out.  Thanks to everyone for the well wishes. The average high here during the winter is 50º and the main building is partitioned so I only have to worry about heating the main section. Being from the north and not really liking the heat, I'll be happy keeping it at 50º and wearing a flannel. Today's project, turn a fork mount battering ram into its own attachment. This is a project for the demolition outfit in ND. It would tear the forks up the old way. Working on some of the stuff I have for them, they'll find a way to tear this up as well. Attached Images
Reply:Ever have a day where you're running around and not getting anywhere? I've just had two in a row. The battering ram hasn't gotten anywhere. I needed my air compressor hooked up. Well that involved moving steel inside, which I needed to have a place for, so I needed to move the previous owners crap around. Hopefully if he sees I'm shoving his stuff together he'll get scared of me wrecking something and kick it in gear getting it out. Well after I got the compressor in place rigged it up to test it, still worked, had to run around getting a hose to plumb it in and fittings and get the proper electrical stuff to wire it right. Well coming back get a call from my dad, my uncle is in town with a truck for us to mount a box and hoist on. Well so had to meet with them and run around and look at parts and come up with a game plan. Will today we started, got the box, got a hinge setup for the rear which later we found out was included with the new hoist we bought. Well after all that my uncle decided he wanted to buy a new box, so back to town, and we had another trip to town later too, we did get the hoist set on, I cut the frame and mounted the hinge,  got the frame brackets tacked on. Called it a night. Attached Images
Reply:Well after a lot of work, frustration, and swearing I will never work with my uncle again, the box and hoist are mounted. He will have to get the pump mated to the pto and run his controls and lines in nd.My magnetic starter switch broke on me. The pressure switch is getting and giving power but there is no power going to the motor. So I'll have to spend time tomorrow trying to find one locally, but more than likely end up having to order one. Attached Images
Reply:Well the battering ram was completed, going to test it out on this old truck at the shop tonight when I have someone here to record it for me. But today I have some aluminum to weld. Attached Images

Reply:Alright settle down, I'm not going to wreck the truck, just get some of you worried. That truck is my first vehicle ever, got it when I was 13, running and driving for $300.Thats a 39 banjo, first year juice brakes but has the wide five hubs. And I'd want way more than $200 for them.

Reply:Well I've been busy and most of it has been other people's "oh crap" work. Now that I'm in the shop I've been the one saying oh crap all the time.  Lack of some tools that make bigger jobs easier and the tools I have not making things easy for me either. This dump box needed the hinges extended for dumping demolition debris. Finally got to a point where I could start welding today. I still need to make some gussets tonight, new pins, and cut a plate for the tailgate, then cut the welds holding the tailgate and test it out.Forgot the pics.Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2 Attached Images

Reply:Welding across the frame flange like you did can get the vehicle red tagged by the D.O.T. Vertical welds are only allowed if the manufacturer allows it and they never do. The D.O.T. is really coming down hard on that stuff now.

Reply:So I haven't updated anything in awhile figured I'd show this project, I got this from the local scrap yard, he picked up this roll off flatbed, he wanted it made into a box, I traded him the labor for a aluminum horse trailer that needs repair but in the end should net me a better profit than I would get for just doing the work on the box alone.  Closest shot I've got to what I started with, notice the bow in the deck, notice the skidsteer in the background, it was my father's, through a long story, it would be sold during this project and I was left without a forklift or loader around the shop.  I made the door, made the front extend up, I used the door to get the rear uprights square on that very uneven deck by tacking them to the door.  Then I used the cherry picker to lift the side rails in place, still had the skidsteer but in the end would have taken more time trying to get it with that.  Basic framework done.  Now for the real fun part...Went down the middle on the one side and welded some hooks to the top rail and the deck, took the power puller and pulled down.  Worked from the ends putting the formed 11g C channel pieces up. The other side was tweaked a little more than that side and I needed to weld hooks in a different spot as just in the middle wasn't getting the whole side even like it did on the first side.  All done with the uprights.Next step was making the door hinge.  I don't have a shot but I know somebody would jump all over me if I didn't mention it swings out and back to the side to be chained up for dumping.  Putting up the 11g sheets, what did I sign up for?Did I mention this is one of the few scrap yards that sells "scrap" steel to the public still?  This was new steel that I'm sure someone ordered wrong and scrapped it (manufacturer) because they have a couple pallets of this 1 1/4" x 1/4" flat strap 20' sticks.  I went in there and grabbed a bunch from them for this, not only did it work for filling the gaps, also gives it some more strength where these start breaking/rusting out at the bottom.
Reply:And why did I mention the skidsteer being sold in the middle of this project?  Well it wasn't fun getting it in with the skidsteer, there isn't rollers on the rear like most roll offs, just round pipe to drag.  Well to get it out without anything, I used a side by side ramming into it to get it straight with the door, then hooked it to my pickup and drug it out.

Reply:Well here's one I did last week and had to spend the weekend watching paint dry.  If you ever spray rustoleum gloss, make sure you use a hardener.  There is a trailer sales place here in town that they send me work when they get it in.  If they sell a jack a lot of times they offer install, goes to my shop, they trade in a trailer if it needs welding they bring it to me.  They're getting into the feed sales business and wanted to add a sign onto their existing sign.  They needed a frame built and came to me.  Fitting and tacking the frame.WeldedWell we've been having a cold snap here so they wanted me to paint this for them since they don't have a shop.  Good for me for two reasons, one I haven't picked up a spray gun in close to ten years, I even bought new spray guns and haven't gotten to use them till now.  Two, it gave me an excuse to paint the wheels I've had sandblasted for my '54 Chevy, money is tight so haven't spent money on my car hobby.  Frame painted and sign installed in it.I went there today and welded it up on top of the main sign.  The wheels need a second coat, they are sanded but I want to get some hardener, the frame and the wheels took a little over 24 hours to be dry enough that my fingernail wouldn't scrape the paint off.  Hopefully find time for that this week and get my white walls mounted.

Reply:Thanks everyone for the compliments.  This is actually my third go with a business of my own.  First was when I was laid off from Case, I did alright, but when it got closer to winter I got a job at John Deere, then Case called me back.  Second time, I was trying to buy a driveline shop.  I was working nights at Case and running that during the day for about a month, I told the guy I wouldn't quit my job until everything was in writing, through a long story I was bailing this guy out of a bad investment, well in the end if flip flopped on the deal we originally came up with and I had to walk away from it.   Originally Posted by BucketOboltsGot any more pics of the Barracuda?

Reply:You sir, are living my dream. Or nightmare depending on the day the rent is due and how much is in the bank account. Best of luck to ya, and keep up the good work. Reply:I would be lost in that shop! There are no trails to guide you to where you need to go, I would just wonder around in circles.I am interested in the driveshaft setup in the lathe if you don't mind sharing. Looks like a special jig that goes in the tailstock which I assume has a bearing in it to allow the driveshaft to spin? While I don't go looking for driveshaft work every now and then I need to make one up or shorten one or what have you.
Reply:Hope things continue working in your favor. It seems like your off to a good start. Nice work and love the open shop . I didn't see a gantry or overhead hoist. Is that gonna be a future project ? I would be lost with my beam and electric hoist.

Reply:So business was extremely slow in December, then January I was overwhelmed, mainly stemming from an order of 6 of my ATV cattle guard crossings, problems I ran into with them that we had to work around, mainly the fact that the old man sold all the oil pipe we had and so we ended up cutting up the feedlot to get pipe for this.  I built the first one for advertising freehand, got that on consignment auction to see what it brings.  Well for these I ended up investing some money in making a jig to make the basic frame for holding the sides up square, and making the basic frame square.  The jig also makes it so I can weld the arches on the rails, and put the whole assembly in the jig.  This guy will probably order more in the future, he's going to see how these work.  I have spacers I use, but I have to tack one pipe at a time working from the bottom up.  When I get some more pipe and make another one, I'm going to make jigs that fit all the tubes in place on each side so I can tack them all in place at once.  I'd also like to make a rotissery for them, but that's more for my personal convenience because loading them in it would eat up any time I would save just welding overhead.  Now I'm playing the waiting game, waiting on parts to get this done and get paid.  Last edited by Antibling; 02-20-2014 at 11:32 AM.
Reply:I guess it's been a long time since I've updated this, been a long week so maybe I'll sit and relax a bit and update on where I'm at in my year and a half of business.  It's been steadily getting busier, and with another local shop that closed up at the end of last year, it's only been a mad rush since the beginning of December.  I've been fortunate enough to be getting enough work and the bank (after the people working for the government were no help) gave me a line of credit and been buying tools and materials and still being able to pay it off and pay my bills.  Anyways enough talking I'll post some pictures, first the finished fender/running board replacement I left you all hanging on.  The trailer place in town brings me a lot of business.  Most people who go in to buy a jack from them or repair parts just have them bring it over to me to do the work so they only have to deal with one place.  They've also been selling a lot of new trailers so they bring trade-ins to me to have any cracks or issues repaired.  They like my work and I'm reasonable with them because they bring me so much and treat me right if I need parts from them.  I don't take pictures of most things I do for them though, jack replacement and cracked welds aren't exciting, but sometimes I do things to new trailers that I like.  Like modifying saddle racks, hay racks, and ladders. I also got a dog this summer as well.  They've hired me to make and install a sign frame for them.
Reply:They've sent people my way to get divider gates made and installed in their trailers as well. Welded hitches on.And even made and installed a frame for a portable building for them to enclose it and mount a garage door to.
Reply:I think I made a thread for this project but wanted to put it here.  Local scrapyard wanted me to build sides and a gate for a "flatbed" roll-off.  I say "flatbed" because it was more of a "curvebed" as it had a huge dip in the middle.  First order of business was to build the basic framework and get the top rails on.  Built the gate and tacked it on then got the top rails in.  I had a local shop shear some 11 gauge and bend it for me.  I welded rings in the center of the dip and top rail and used come-alongs to get the middles to meet up.  Being beat up then I needed to use the high-lift to get some of them in in other spots.
