Hey guys, any suggestions on a 6013 3F positon technique. I am working on it in class and am having a problem with heat and neatness.  Looks super drippy exspecially at the top. Havent had this issue yet.  Ive turned. The heat down and sped up and lowed down.  Im stumped.“It is better to fail in originality than to succeed in imitation.” ― Herman Melville“Those who believe in telekinetics, raise my hand.” ― Kurt Vonnegut

Reply:I've never run much 6013. But have played with it some. For 3-F I'd run it a lot like 7018. Build a shelf first, then point the rod slightly up, and make small side to side motion. For flat welding you really need to have a lot of angle on the rod to force the slag behind the puddle. Reply:I run quite a bit of 6013, hard to tell what exact problem you're having without a pic, but like CEP said, build a shelf first.  On 3f, I'd usually run about 120-130amp and keep the rod at about 5* upward angle, also as CEP said, a very slight side to side motion (I'd add to hold just a bit longer on the sides than when crossing the middle to avoid undercut or a heavily crowned bead). That's just what works for me, give it a shot, post some pics, let us see what's actually going on with the weld.--Wintermute"No man's knowledge here can go beyond his experience." - John Lockewww.improvised-engineering.comManufacturer Agnostic:Blood----------Sweat---------Tears----|------------------|----------------|----Lincoln Red, Miller Blue, Esab Yellow
Reply:Make sure you're not running too cold. My students will keep turning the amps down to correct a drooping puddle but often times it's the wrong move. If you don't have enough amps to bite into/heat the plate all of the heat will end up in the center of the weld and it will want to roll out. The key to weaving the 3f is to get the shelf started correctly and just a small side to side to weld out. You can also stringer the root pass in the 3F, depending on what you are doing, but the stringer won't be very large, 3/16" to 1/4" max, and depending on what you are doing will often times require more passes. Once you get the root/first pass in, the 3F becomes significantly easier.
Reply:Like burns said, don't run it too cold- 6013 likes to be run hot. Generally, for 3F, if your weld droops or is humped in the middle, you need to pause longer on the sides and move faster across the middle. 6013 has heavier slag than 7018 so it can be harder to see the puddle and it may take a bit of practice to get it right.   Also, if you are getting more sagging and undercut near the top of the weld it is most likely because the metal is getting too hot.  Try using larger coupons or shorter welds, not all the way to  the top.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
Reply:Well, after reading what yall posted and my teacher telling me that rod is not normally used I moved on. Overhead. I did run a couple more 6013 implementing some of your suggestions. And it was better. But after running 60+ I was over it. Made a 93  on the project so it's good. One photo is 6013 vehicle booii look at that about.. and niw im on iverhead7018. Feeling better now..thanks guys..Cheers WD Attached Images“It is better to fail in originality than to succeed in imitation.” ― Herman Melville“Those who believe in telekinetics, raise my hand.” ― Kurt Vonnegut
Reply:Let me get this right. The first coupon shows issues. The second one is after running 60+ coupons?
Reply:Just a suggestion, when running overhead in that position stick the rod straight out of the end of the stinger. It will help to get your body/wrist in a better, more flexible position for adjusting as you weld.
