Got an 01 1500 silverado and a 9500 lbs. winch looking for front mount ideas. Not wanting to go full blown off road style bumper maybe something along the lines of a grill guard.
Reply:Warn made a mount exactly as you are describing. not sure if it is still available or not... You could also do a front hitch reciever mount as well- Christian M.C3 Welding & Fabrication - CNC Plasma Cutting-Mobile Welding-Custom welding and fabwww.c3welding.com

Reply:A grill guard that will hold a winch is going to be rated much lower than a front receiver. Those things are not strong at all.If you want the original bumper in place your best option is a front receiver and a cradle. Get someone to help you on and of with it or build a rolling cart with a shelf the right height for it so you don't slip a disc.GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:I've got a 12k warn mounted to a hidden hitch mount, let's you keep your original bumper it mounts behind the bumper. You bumper moves forward 8 inches it's a beast of a mount made out of 3/8 steel. It's in a 2001 SuperDuty. I can't figure how to upload pics with my iPhone but if they still make it it's called a Hidden Hitch.Miller 252 Mig w/Spool GunMiller Dynasty 350 TigMiller 225 AC-DC StickMiller Spectrum 875 PlasmaOxy/Acet.
Reply:Yep still made Warn Hidden Hitch mount, not a receiver mount.Miller 252 Mig w/Spool GunMiller Dynasty 350 TigMiller 225 AC-DC StickMiller Spectrum 875 PlasmaOxy/Acet.
Reply:There is a big advantage to having a winch on a receiver hitch that can be used front or back. There may be times when stuck, to winch out backwards rather than forwards. It may be because it is closer backwards, or maybe there is nothing in reach forward to tie to, to winch against. If you are wheeling with a friend along, then swapping the winch front to back won't be such a big deal. If they are stuck WITH you, then most likely they WILL be willing to help move the winch to get moving again. Just something to think about while planning this mount.
Reply:Yup, I plan on the hitch front and back and winch on receiver. Plus with a cord it can be used on any vehicle with a hitch.12v battery, jumper cables, and a 6013.I only have a facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/pages/VPT/244788508917829
Reply:IMHO: Seriously consider replacing the cable with synthetic line. The synthetic is just as strong and much safer to use. You will save about 40 to 50lbs of depending on the weight of your steel cable. Only drawback; ****ty abrasion resistance…
Reply:good idea thanks
Reply:With a removable winch you can almost guarantee that you will not have it with you when you get stuck. It will be safe warm and dry in the shop. Mount it on the front and be done with it.
Reply:Walker is correct. I have a removable 12,000 Winch and you have to really pay attention that it is in the truck. The up side it can be moved to front, rear, in the bed for Jen poles. I also have mounts on my gooseneck and car hauler trailer and use the same winch. The trailers have batteries and I use 250 amp battery cable plugs mounted where ever the winch will be used. I also made up some long jumper cables with the cable plug so that it could be used on the rear if my kids vehicles when they do something stupid
Reply:i made one for a reciever.........had the guy hard wire a socket.....then I made a alum diamond plate cover box with rubber stainless latches........all the cables fit inside the box......here is a pic

Reply:Looks to me like you would have to pull square with the truck or you would bend the recover?
Reply:I have done a little winching (LOL), on the trails. On a Jeep, the winch plate sits on top of the frame rails and bolts directly to them. The receiver mounted winch sounds better than it actually is. There are situations where it works fine, but on trails, there are too many situations where you cannot get a direct forward/rearward pull. Pulling off to one side or another, is the weak link in a receiver mounted winch. Most winch's have 100 foot or more of cable, if you have the correct equipment and you know how to use it, you should have no trouble pulling your vehicle forward or rearward with a winch mounted to the front of your vehicle. Reply:Winch mounts........So ya wanna see winch mounts????????I bought the gears, and drum, at an auction. I believe I paid about $20. My feeling was that nobody there knew what it was. When I bought it, it was just a pile of stuff, no mount, etcSo I built the mount. It's set up to be completely portable (like it's REALLY portable at about 100lbs) The pin in the back is so it can be hooked to anything using a chain. The bar thingy in the front is so you can do a double line pull with a snatch block. It's moved some very heavy stuffWas so long ago that Clarence was still alive, hadn't met K'kins, and the yard still looked like a jungle back thenHand powered, no batteries to fail. Wimps need not apply"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
