My brother asked me to build him a small wagon to pull behind his restored garden tractor when he goes to antique farm shows. He has a Case tractor so I decided that I would try to make a 1/2 scale of a Case wagon. Here is what I tried to copy.I started with a front axle from a Case garden tractor. I cut the spindles off and used them for the steering. I had to clean up the "farmer" repair on the one. Yeah, I know, but it'll be ok!Lincoln Square wave 255Miller Vintage mig30a spoolgunThermal Dynamics Pacmaster 100xl plasmaSmith mc torchEllis 1600 band saw
Reply:Here is the repair to the spindle. The arm that the ball joint bolts to had come loose. The person who did the repair believed that quantity makes up for quality when it comes to welding.  Attached ImagesYeah, I know, but it'll be ok!Lincoln Square wave 255Miller Vintage mig30a spoolgunThermal Dynamics Pacmaster 100xl plasmaSmith mc torchEllis 1600 band saw
Reply:Next I beefed up the spindles with a gusset.Next I cut a piece of 2x4x1/8" tube for the front bolster to look like the original. Then I fitted the spindle pivot to it. I had to crimp the tube a bit to fit the pivot. Since the pivot is cast iron I welded that with Nomacast rod. Getting the angle right was a bit of a challenge because there was no part of the original axle that was straight to get an angle reading from, but I got it pretty close. Then I attached the reach pipe and braces. Then I attached the stearing mechanism to the front. The tube is 2x2x3/16" with some 1/2" bar welded inside to help keep it from wearing out. The plates are 3/8" and the bolts are 1/2"Last edited by welderj; 02-11-2015 at 12:10 AM.Yeah, I know, but it'll be ok!Lincoln Square wave 255Miller Vintage mig30a spoolgunThermal Dynamics Pacmaster 100xl plasmaSmith mc torchEllis 1600 band saw
Reply:I had to lengthen the tie rods so I welded in a piece of 1/2" rod. I bought ball joints, but they are 3/8" so I welded a 3/8" fine thread bolt to the tie rod for the second ball joint. 1/2" ball joints were $35.00 verses $8.00 for the 3/8", so he'll have to deal with the difference.I used a piece of 1 1/2x3/8" flat welded to the 2x2 tube for the tie rods and 2 pieces of the same for the turn stops. The geometry of the steering threw me off for a bit. On all the wagons that I measured the distance from the pivot bolt to the ball joint was shorter than the distance from the center of the spindle to the ball joint, but when I set this one up that way the steering didn't work. For some reason I can't figure out this one has to be the opposite. Took some trial and error but I got it working. The tongue is 1x2x1/8" tube and the hitch and pivot is 1x3/8" flat. The hitch is 1 1/2x3/8" flat, I just heated it a bit and put an S bend in it to look more original, the drilled a 5/8" hole for the pin.Yeah, I know, but it'll be ok!Lincoln Square wave 255Miller Vintage mig30a spoolgunThermal Dynamics Pacmaster 100xl plasmaSmith mc torchEllis 1600 band saw
Reply:Next was the rear section. Started with another 2x4x1/8" tube. The angle pieces are 2x2x3/16" because thats what I had. They could have been made from the 2x4 tube, but I didn't have enough. So I just cut and fit 2 pieces of the 2x2 on each side. Then I welded in the 3/4" cold rolled shaft for the axle and capped the bottom. Reply:Next was to fab up the reach pipe for the rear section. The pipes are 1 1/4" black pipe for the outer and 1" for the inner. Here is how I made the part so the two pipes can twist for uneven ground. A 3/8 bolt goes through the 1" long piece of 1 1/4" and the 1"pipe inside to keep the halves hooked together but allowing for twist. Then weld it to the bolster with angle braces and a gusset just like the front. Then I added the rear hitch plateYeah, I know, but it'll be ok!Lincoln Square wave 255Miller Vintage mig30a spoolgunThermal Dynamics Pacmaster 100xl plasmaSmith mc torchEllis 1600 band saw
Reply:Here it is assembled. It's not quite finnished yet because I need to get some material for the stakes and to add to the angle braces so they look more like the original. I also need to cut the front spindles to length and adjust the toe-in. I'll finnish it next time I'm home.Last edited by welderj; 02-11-2015 at 12:11 AM.Yeah, I know, but it'll be ok!Lincoln Square wave 255Miller Vintage mig30a spoolgunThermal Dynamics Pacmaster 100xl plasmaSmith mc torchEllis 1600 band saw

Reply:That may need to visit the SEMA show at some point.  That was a lot of detailed work.  Hope your brother is not like my non-working-with-his-hands-brother.....he would look at it, not appreciate the time, effort and skill, walk off without so much as a thank you. Reply:Gotta agree with Samm, not only should everything be rusty and pitted but should also be bent from driving the tractor over it for the last ten years. It does look good, looks like it could handle a load of hay when it's done.HH 187Miller Bluestar1EAHP AlphaTig 200X
Reply:Got some time to finnish this project today. Bought a piece of 1 1/2x2 formed channel to cut the stakes from. Cut them 3" long then cut them at 20°. I welded them on rather than bolting, I figure there will be no reason to move them unlike a real wagon. Then I cut and trimmed some flats to add to the braces so they looked more original. Cut them to length and trimmed them with the plasma.Yeah, I know, but it'll be ok!Lincoln Square wave 255Miller Vintage mig30a spoolgunThermal Dynamics Pacmaster 100xl plasmaSmith mc torchEllis 1600 band saw

Reply:Great looking little rig. I was getting a laugh out of Samm's comments too... I just made a couple carts for moving aeration fans and ended up using some old combine rub bars for the handles.250 amp Miller DialArc AC/DC StickF-225 amp Forney AC Stick230 amp Sears AC StickLincoln 180C MIGVictor Medalist 350 O/ACut 50 PlasmaLes
