After My post friday I received so much positive input from all of you here, I had to read the context 4-5 times before going in to practice today. I felt that today I had huge improvement with my plates.Instead of putting in 2 passes in the root, I am now placing 3 in. I feel much much better about this. It feels like my welds are tied together and I feel that everything in general is flattened out more.I am probably still putting in to large of a fillet, however I think the fusion at the root is much better. After trying different settings I have finally been able to dial in the machine better, get a more flat weld that is more controllable. My starts and stops I think are beyond poor. I must've tried 200 stops and starts today, they either look like a bulbous lump on top of the crater I tried to tie into, or they look thin as can be and feel/look like they are not fused together. As far as capping goes, I just made sure to maintain a better speed and try to put in consistent welds that are burnt 1 into the other, 3 passes on root, 3 on fill, 3 on cap. I may try 4 for the capI threw together some pics of today's progress, Hopefully Its an improvement from last week. In clockwise, 1. fillet with stop, 2. completed fillet,3.Groove with stop, 4. completed groove, 5. third pass in root.
