The young lady from the rick rack thread wanted a ten foot double drive gate that lives.Homeowners removed the old wood panels and post for the opening. I came in and he helped me dig the two post holes. I use a hydraulic Little Beaver because the holes are in gumbo clay and they are six feet deep by 12" diameter. Yup, the Beaver rides in the truck when I want it to and I can take it out and put it in by myself.I had made the frames up the day before so all we had to do was make sure the opening was 120", or so, inch here or there, nothing but a thing.The hinges are adjustable and we use 5/8" J bolts from the fence supply. The female parts of the hinge and the part on the gate where the threaded part of the bolt goes in and out are made with 7/8" tubing, 1/8" wall. That's tubing so it has no welded seam in the middle, a couple of bucks a foot and you have to buy 20 feet to get it that cheap. But six inches of tubing per gate leaf makes a cheap but wonderful hinge. I also use a piece of 1" channel for spacers to keep the hinge out where it works easiest.The advantage of this set up is the frame is made where the wood rails on the fence are lagged in to the frame. That means the wood pickets are nailed right through the opening. On a gate like this one that swings in that means the only thing showing it is a gate is the latch.I charge fence companys a grand for this installed and of course I rattle can paint it and make it look nice, they do the wood work just like this homeowner will except the fence guys use nail guns and the homeowner will use screwsI also do walk gates. We now have it where the fence company will send me a photo of the opening along with a sketch with the measurements. I need to know the rail spacing because we want the nail lines to be the same in the gate as it is in the fence panels. Most of the time those jobs involve pool gates so the gate has to open out and the latch has to 54" off the grade. On those gates I use rod end bearings because they have to live forever, swimming pools and kids. And having the gate where it opens out and self closes means gravity hinges, offset if you know what I mean.This job the client was responsible for paint. The posts are 3 1/2" drill stem and they will adjust their existing rail brackets to match the gate and post rail brackets I welded on. Reply:harv; i like the adjustable J hinge setup. i also use the offset hinge trick to make the gate a self closer. two questions though- is there a bushing or insert inside the post side tube and it appears the gate can be removed by lifting upward. how is it secured?i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla
Reply:I wasn't worried about securing the gates in this case for two reasons. The number one reason was the neighborhood, it's upscale and family oriented and property crime is non existent. The other was gravity, after the wood is installed the gates will be too heavy for one person to lift and very difficult for two. When I do worry about security the bottom hinge is usually upside down with the top hinge carrying all the weight. Also on this gate the client will secure the pickets like I told him, he's a great kid, forty two being a kid in my world. The only thing giving there being a gate there will be the little black latch handle sticking out. They want the gates for use just a couple of times a year, huge backyard and they have a garden etc. That's why they waited for me to come around and build it for them. His dad's gates are almost twenty five years old with wood over steel that I made and they are still usable. Most of the time gates this size in these kinds of fences are worthless within two years.life is good |
