I'm a lift mechanic at [undisclosed ski resort] and they needed a new rail built.  The bosses wanted it done in-house, and wanted it done right, so they came to me.  It's a 42 foot long c-bow (cross between a c and a rainbow I guess?).  4" OD 1/4" wall tube for the top with 2 1/2" x 1/4" square tube for legs and braces.  1/4" thick gussets in all corners.  The butt weld in the 2 sections of tube was TIG welded, the rest MIG.  It's nice to be doing some real fabrication at work. You didn't build that.'85 Miller AEAD-200LE
Reply:looks really nice ...now to move it lolhow did you bend it all?i know half of you half as well as i should like and like less then half of you half as well as you deserve
Reply:The pipe was rolled to my spec by a local company.  They didn't want to buy me a $20,000 roller.  They did buy that shiny new JET bandsaw though.  All I had before was a wobbly old makita chop saw with a stamped sheetmetal base that went out of square when you clamp the material down.Moving it will be fairly simple with the Gradall.  Once it's out the shop door, it's not my problem.  You didn't build that.'85 Miller AEAD-200LE

Reply:I don't actually ride.  I'm a leisure skier.   Give me a long winding trail through the woods that takes 20 minutes to get to the bottom, and I'm Happy. You didn't build that.'85 Miller AEAD-200LE
Reply:Sounds like fun
Reply:Looks really nice!
Reply:Sweet.  I always thought it would be fun to build that stuff.  As a snowboarder, you see the well-built stuff and the 'it might last the season' stuff.

Reply:Looks fun... I think you should be the first to test it.... After all, you built it"I thank God for all the freedoms we've got in this country, I cherish even the right to burn the flag, but I'll tell you what, we've also got the right to bear arms and if you burn my flag I'll shoot you"-Johnny Cash

Reply:Maybe this will convince them to buy a real welder for the shop.  All they have is a Lincoln weldanpower 225 with a broken wire feeder and a previously broken TIG starter. That TIG unit hadn't worked in 15 years, had been looked at by 3 "mechanics" and 2 welders and diagnosed as junk.  I polished and reset the spark gaps, dug all the mud wasp crap out of the gas solenoid and hooked it back up the right way, then  I cobblefraked it together with a Miller footpedal and it works beautifully.  Just wish it had a contactor in it.  That machine is too noisy and stinky to run inside for any length of time, and the welding trailer is blocked in by snowcats and other crap.I lugged in my modded harbor freight 180 and had to make an extension cord to hook it up to the dryer outlet in the bathroom Because there's no working 220 receptacles anywhere in the shop.  The frame took me 4 days to weld out, Because I was chasing the duty cycle on that little bitty machine.  I didn't want to bring in anything better, Because then they'd have no incentive to buy something better. You didn't build that.'85 Miller AEAD-200LE

Reply:Oh... the inevitable.  VAIL bought park city this winter, and they already owned canyons.  Official plans haven't been announced yet, but I hear there's some pretty big stuff coming down the pipe for both resorts, since they're right next door to each other. You didn't build that.'85 Miller AEAD-200LEOriginally Posted by anickode... a Lincoln weldanpower 225 with a broken wire feeder and a previously broken TIG starter...then  I cobblefraked it together...I lugged in my modded harbor freight 180 ...extension cord to hook it up to the dryer outlet in the bathroom Because there's no working 220 receptacles anywhere in the shop.
Reply:I just never understood why there's no effin power in the shop.  The hill has about 12,000kva worth of service feeding it.  Shop has 480 in the building.  Lights are all 277.  Not one stinking high power receptacle anywhere.I'm trying to sell the boss man on an XMT304 with an S22 feeder.  Nice and compact, wire it for 480, then we can use the XMT304 anywhere on the hill Because you're never more than 100 feet from a 60 amp 480 receptacle. (Snowmaking hookups)You didn't build that.'85 Miller AEAD-200LE
