I've had two drills break in the last month and both were fixed fast and for free from Hitachihttp://www.hitachipowertools.com/ind..._Warranty.aspxthey have a lifetime warranty on their drills. I used to use Dewalt drills but their service sucked and was expensive. The Dewalt drills would last about a year before the chuck or motor wore out and they charged $80 to fix. I could get the drill new with two batteries at the store for $20 more?!? Worse part is they took 2 weeks to fix and it took them 3 times to finally fix it!!!! So if you need a drill I highly recommend the hitachi lithium ion ones with lifetime warranty.
Reply:I'd love to know what you do to destroy drills so fast. My Dewalt 18v hammer drill is probably my #2 most used tool on the truck. It used to be #1 before I got my 18V Dewalt impact driver, which is now #1.I have 2 14v Dewalt L handle hammer drills that are more than 14 years old and still run. One went in for a damaged case one time ( dropped off scaffolding), the 2nd went in to have the trigger replaced. We beat the ever living pizz out of them as well on a daily basis drilling in concrete and driving hundreds of screws a week. Never had any issues with the Dewalt store we used to do any of our tool repairs. The only real reason I still don't use the 14v drills as much any more is that the batteries eventually wouldn't hold a charge any more and it was cheaper to get new 18v ones because it would give me more tool options and keep the number of different batteries I need to keep on hand to a minimum. I still use the 14v ones as my backups or around the house.I think my 18v one is going on 6 or 8 years now. I bought a spare when they were on clearance at Depot, but it's still in the box unopened because I've never had an issue with my primary one. My impact is at least 5 years old with never an issue..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Well mostly we just use the crap out of them!  Probably 2 to 3  hrs a day the whole year. Now that we are welding the frames instead of using mechanical fasteners, they might last longer.Plus my workers change the bits a lot the cheap plastic chuck wears out quickly and slips after about a year is the most significant issue. Now I've just bought more drills so they can work faster. It's a pretty common issue with the $100 special 18v dewalts. Everyone says dewalt is the best, but honestly that has not been my experience. I've got 5 busted ones. Most of the more expensive hammer drills you use have metal chucks that do not have that issue. Plus why would you buy a drill that has a 1 year warranty when for the same price you can get a drill JUST AS GOOD IMHO with a lifetime warranty?
Reply:Plus the dewalt service tech called me and said that I had one day to pay for the repair or they would throw away my drill. They refused to send it back to me even though their warranty specifically states they are responsible for return shipping. This was after telling me that I should send it in under their 3 year warranty. They sent it back broken, I returned it. 2nd time they sent it back broken with the same issue, aclutch that slipped, and fintally 3rd time they sent me a replacement drill. That's the type of service you get for $80.
Reply:Part of your problem is the cheap $100 drills. Probably why mine last longer, as they weren't manufactured to simply meet a price point. Then again I simply don't buy cheap tools since I make my money with them. Never really bought into the " buy cheap because we'll only destroy it" stuff. I've always found "expensive" quality tools simply last longer and are "cheaper" in the long run. I will admit my older "Made in USA" Dewalts are hands down better than the newer imported ones.I've honestly never been all that impressed with any of the HItachi box store tools. I've got 2 grinders I inherited from a friend and I'll grab my Dewalts every time given a choice. Same goes with drills other guys have on a job. The industrial tools are a bit different. A lifetime warranty is nice, as long as they continue to honor it. Sear Craftsman's are a good example, as I think whoever the "lifetime" warranty was based on died a few years back. Bring in a quality "lifetime" tool and if they no longer carry it they give you a POS one with no warranty to replace it at best. That or they tell you they just can't help you.As far as Dewalt service, I guess we are lucky there's a service center just down the road from us. It's dangerous place to go however, as they usually have all sorts of overstock and "returned" goods dirt cheap. Most stuff is brand new that they took back when stores upgraded to new models or simply stuff where the package was damaged or ripped open. Many times stuff is at 25-40% what it normally retails for.Last edited by DSW; 12-20-2012 at 10:06 AM..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Well the wierd thing is i have seen these $100 drills (whichi are normally more like 150 or 180 when not on sale) with metal chucks before.dewalt quality seems to be going downhill. I did buy some metal chuck dewalts before discovering the lifetime warranty hitachis, but now there is no turning back.
Reply:I love my Hitachi DS18DSAL.  Lots of power for its weight.
Reply:http://www.lowes.com/pd_307877-67702...cagpspn=pla%22Prolly one of my favorite tools, this thing is a beast and i have been nothing but impressed. As far as drills go, 18 volt Dewalt hammer drill, and anything over 1/2" i use the slugger.I forgot how to change this.
Reply:Any Dewalt I've ever had had a steel chuck.  I was not aware that they made a plastic Cheapo model.  I've never seen one.TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum
Reply:I guess you havent' looked at your local home depot or lowes for the last couple of years then, i see them ALL the time.
Reply:I agree, honestly im not impressed with DeWalts products, I've used their corded drill, and my makita cordless has way more power, and a better chuck. I have a few Hitachi tools, I'm happy with them, but you'll never go wrong with a makita IMO. http://www.philswelding.com

Reply:"next are going to be dewalt "good luck. I sincerely hope you spend a bit more and get a metal chuck drill from dewalt other wise you might find your self in the same situation as me. Dumping over a $1000 in 9 dewalt drills for Hitachi.
Reply:I wont buy cheap. I get sick of cheap companies changing styles every year dewalt keeps theirs the same.
