I am shopping for a 7-inch angle grinder.  I am considering a Metabo W24-180.  Can't seem to find a reliable source for how long this thing is.  My research so far has come up with 18-27 inches. If its 27-inches, its likely going to be a tad big for my intended use, and not sure if its size will lend itself to the home hobbyist, or if its more suited for an industrial setting.Anyone own a Metabo W24-180?  How long is it?  Has the size been a factor in its use, if so please explain?  Also, with a 2400 watt motor, I am figuring it will need a 20 amp breaker.  -Anyone using one of these have any problems running it on a 20 amp breaker? Thanks!GarLincoln Electric, Power MIG 256Hypertherm Powermax 45 Miller Dynasty 280DXSmith O/A torchGenesis of a welding table

Reply:The product dimensions from Amazon, Length 27.16 inches, is more than likely the packaging length.

Reply:Originally Posted by GarHi Gerry, thanks for the input. You made me think a little more on this...  Volts x Amps= watts (240 volts x 16 amps would be 3840 watts).  So in the UK it would be more then adequate with a 240 volt service.  But as you know, on this side of the pond we are on 110v or 115v for standard residential service.  Figuring 115v x 20 amps would give me 2300 watts, so it comes close, but not quite. -It would be nice to know if it would still run OK, and not trip a 20 amp breaker.  The Metabo's are made in Germany, so maybe their "heavy duty grinders," like the "W24-180," are engineered to run on 240v, and not 115v.   As far as the 7-inch grinder, there seems to be more wheels in the 7-inch variety then the 9-inch variety available locally, so for that reason I was considering a 7-inch with a strong motor.Cheers,Gar

Reply:Ok guys you cant put #12 on anything bigger than a 20 amp breaker. Thhn will actual carry 30 amps without burning the insullation but the devices (plugs and switches) are not rated for that much heat. All receptacle circuits are 120 volts. Tberes no such thing as 110 115 unless you got a serious service problem or a transformer with the wrong tap settings. Btw theres no such thing as 440 460 3 phase either. Its 480 and it will usually be more like 490s at the panel. And last but most important. If the thing says its 2400 watts thats probably with the heaviest load it can handle. It wont pull max amps all the time. So pretty much if it has a 120 plug on the cord it will ALWAYS work on a 20 amp circuit. Just buy it and if it trips the breaker run a dedicated circuit for the grinder.  If its a messed up design and for some reason it trips a dedicated 20 amp cicuit ( which should never happen) run a 30 amp circuit with #10 and put a 30amp 250volt plug in and hook it up to 120v. Then change the cordcap on the grinder.....but thats an end of the world scenario that would never need to happen with a UL LISTED APPLIANCE. Hope that eases your mind. Stuff is pretty much set up by electricians and manufacturers so that if it plugs in the wall it works.  Dont worry about it. Just make sure its the voltage you want. It should say 120 volts on the box
Reply:15 amp circuits arent really suited for a shop........ like every big tool will trip em. BummerLast edited by jamesyarbrough; 12-31-2012 at 11:46 PM.

Reply:Happy new year!   I dont think your gonna have any problems man. Congrats on the purchase
Reply:Just measured mine, 24 inches to the end of the rubber cord protector, 21 inches to end of handle.Mine has tripped my 20 amp breaker on start up a couple of times, not consistantly and I think the breaker is just weak as I can switch to another and it won't trip it. On my tripping breaker it only does it at start up ( surge ) and once running its ok, more of a inconvience of resetting the breaker or moving to a difference outlet.I don't use the 7 inch that much as I have two six inchers, which are smaller lighter, and I only pull out the seven inch when I need the bigger blade to get into something or I am in hog grinding mode, which is rare.
Reply:Kinda off topic but if you have to run a dedicated 20 amp circuit, dont forget to use a 20 amp rated receptacle.  Most residental receptacles are 15 amp. You know a 20 when you see it because the neutral slot is in the shape of a T instead of a plain slot. Also keep voltage drop in mind. If your more than 40 wire feet from the panel you can up the wire size to 10 awg on a 20 amp breaker. That will help it trip less and save you money on your electric bill. Search voltage drop
Reply:@Fred,21" is a whole lot better then 27"!  Thanks for the info.  I was at Lowe's today looking at 125 amp sub panels.  That will be my next project.  I am fortunate in that I will be able to mount the sub panel within 5 feet of the main service panel, in fact I may even be able to mount it on the opposite of the wall. @James, Good post, many folks are not aware of that.  GarLincoln Electric, Power MIG 256Hypertherm Powermax 45 Miller Dynasty 280DXSmith O/A torchGenesis of a welding table
Reply:It's a 15 amp grinder, it should work just fine on a 15a breaker as long as your not running other stuff off it at the same time.

Reply:220/220/220 if that means you have 220v on each phase thats just more of the mistakes I was talking about. On a wye you got two choices. 277/480 and 120/208.  And almost everything unless really old is on a wye xformer. Trust me

Reply:My observation on the 7 vrs 9 is the seven inch is the same grinder body with a difference size guard and wheel, so weight difference is very small an ounce or two most. The above holds true on the Metabo's and Dewalts unsure on different brands. The weight of a big grinder is also why I am so fussy on vice height, most I have seen are mounted too high and you end up killing yourself using the grinder.
