Found an article on the Lincoln website that claims that constant current should be used when MIG welding aluminum at the 300+ amp range. I find this interesting as Miller claims you should not exceed 300 amps. Material is 1-1/2" thick, 4'x4' plate with a chunk of 12" diameter x 16" tall aluminum round stock in the middle. Series of gusset plates are then welded around that. Opinions? Reply:I used to own a factory Spoolgun setup on an Airco branded 330abp. So yes it is out at least was an accepted method to weld aluminumTiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250

Reply:id break out the tiger torch for some good preheat on that. I have a cc contacter at work so you can hook a spool gun up to a cc power source  its miller made and older then me never used it but ive heard it worksHigh Octane Welding
Reply:I have the same old Miller/Airco setup with a fancy box to help you mig weld with a CC source. The fancy box is supposed to vary the wire speed based on the arc voltage. In other words, it approximates the CV process, but the wire speed regulation is very slow and low gain compared to a voltage regulated CV machine. In my opinion it is not very good for general welding. Not anywhere near as easy to set up as the other welder I use, a 30A spoolgun with a CV source (Shopmaster). If you are doing a long run, and have lots of test material, you CAN dial it in and get an acceptable weld, but it takes time to get the settings just right. The starts are still pretty hard though compared to CV.One day I'm going to build a box to strap onto my big old welder to use the main transformer output and change it to a CV source. Or maybe, I'll just buy a CV box and use my big old spoolgun. It is very useful to have the mig for inside corners vs the tig, that's for sure. I struggle with the tig, and the mig is so easy there. The mig is also way faster.Chay
Reply:I have a CC/CV machine, so it's not an issue getting my welder set up for welding aluminum. I was just a little thrown off by the statement in that article about welding with CC over 350 amps. Not sure why it would say that?John 3:16(2) Miller Pheonix 456(2) Millermertic 252Dynasty 210DXHobart 210MVPDoringer D350 SA Cold SawScotchman 350LT Cold SawWebb 10x50 MillWebb 15x40 LatheGeka Bendicrop Ironworker
