If you wanted to be able to weld most types of scrap metal together, and do so in a remote location where you might not be able to rely on normal electricity, and beauty isn't your top concern, what items would you assemble to create the most basic welding capability?  Why?

Reply:Given the restrictive conditions described, Oxy Acetylene with a cutting and a welding head.   It may sound primitive, but is a true welding process and the beads can look very nice.  And of course, when you can't weld it, you will always have the option of brazing with the same equipment.  No need for power or for special equipment.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT

Reply:actually $200 HF tig/stick welder probably would run off a portable generator it needs 230 volts at 24 amps to give full 145 amps stick and 165 amp tig welding power.it will run 1/8 7018 which i run at 120 to 140 amps or run 1/8 6011 at 100 to 120 or 1/8 6013 at 100 to 125 amps and obviously can weld 1/16 steel with smaller rods and with tig torch and small argon tank easy to weld sheet metal. i got the 60 cu ft argon tank. thats 3 hours of constant tig and tank is easy to carry and put into a car and take any where. or put on a tractor and haul almost anywhere. i also easily run it off a 50 foot 10 ga extension cord all the time. no sense having to hear loud generator noise up closeLast edited by WNY_TomB; 04-05-2016 at 02:02 PM.
Reply:Oxy Acet requires a big Acet tank and tips to weld thicker stuff.  It takes about a 200 CF tank to safely weld stuff about 1/4" - 3/8" due to the withdrawal rate.  Welder-generator is good.  You can't put an inefficient old buzz box on a plain generator unless it's a big one, due to inefficiency.  That's when an inverter welder of maybe 140-160 Amps works well with a reasonable sized generator."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
Reply:Usually inverters welders require clean power so not all generators are good with inverters, but If you get that part squared away and get a 200 amp or so welder pack some 6011 and you got a torch.

Reply:You could always get a battery powered hobart trex. Recharge it from a solar panel.Welds with wire feed flux core wire.
Reply:When I looked into the Hobart trex I was not impressed.I reached the conclusion it is a waste of money, likely the reason it appears to have been discontinued. Here are some of its high points:Cost: $1,2002 to 3 minutes of welding at full powerappears to be discontinuedI can run my little Lincoln 120 volt mig welder at full power and my home made transformer based tig at 2/3 power on my 2000 samlex pure sine wave power inverter.old Miller spectrum 625 Lincoln SP-135 T, CO2+0.025 wireMiller model 250 and WP-18V torchCraftsman 100amp AC/DC and WP-17V torchCentury 115-004 HF arc stabilizerHome made 4 transformer spot welderHome made alternator welder

Reply:Coal forge....big hammer...anvilAnd a little Mex gal to pump the bellows and cook for you.More things all over this Earth have been welded by a blacksmith with hammer, forge and anvil.... and still exists..... than Man has welded with electricity since electric welding first occurred.
Reply:Think about it.....Man had but a rock and a stick in his fists at one time to use to build his world...To survive...To eat....To create shelter..To defend himself....Rocks and sticks....Not even fire was his except by chance....Only the rocks and sticks he could pick up, and not even a way to cut wood or break rocks at first. We today are just a single instant away from total stone age again....Unlike even 50 years ago, we are now totally dependent on tech invented in last 100 years.....and totally unable to instantly go back to the stone age and survive.Just one single EMP blast will totally destroy all we rely totally on.....And it will not kill a single one of us the day it happens....But millions will die soon after. For countless thousands of years people were divided by the oceans...Isolated...Yet almost every tribe or race developed the bow and arrow, huh?...But first the spear....People the last Many thousand years were NOT stupid...Not at all....They lived totally without man made shelter or tools and weapons but they were just as smart as all us us today.....They were only ignorant, but not at all stupid.....We are all still very ignorant and discover tech faster only because yesterday's tech allows us to.We still look at the heavens and wonder what is out there...today we only see farther out and today we are still as ignorant about how big the Universe is as the first cave man to look up at night......It was in my life time that folks discovered the Milky Way was just a simple Galaxy and just one of countless billions or trillions or perhaps zillions in the Universe....And that this planet was part of the Milky Way Galaxy, and our sun was only one of millions and millions in the same galaxy...Not the Universe, but just our little Galaxy.Last edited by wornoutoldwelder; 04-09-2016 at 03:52 AM.
Reply:when that emp blast happens the people who use goatskin bellows and bows and arrows probably won't miss a beat. maybe even be the last men standing? what happens to us could get ugly.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla
