Waited patiently for my Everlast 185dv to come off backorder. It arrived yesterday and looks like this..... Reply:I used to work for UPS way back in the day. The first job I had there was as a box tosser. I don't know what the official job title is, but supervisors were always walking around with stopwatches timing how many boxes each person moved. They'd get obnoxious and yell insults if you weren't fast enough. So "box tosser" is what I always called the job. Looks like maybe a supervisor was yelling at somebody for not going fast enough just before your box came through the line.1969 Chris Craft Roamer 46 RefitMiller TB280 w/Spoolmatic 30a2016 AHP AlphaTIG 200XAncient Millermatic 35Zeny Cut50 plasma cutter

Reply:That company should have figured out better packaging by now.The cost of those welders must be less than the cost of Styrofoam and cardboard.

Reply:You could make that box ironclad and UPS would find a way to destroy your stuff.Been there, done that with them a few times. I meticulously pack anything that ships UPS. Since I've switched to the heavy wall boxes from Uline, I haven't had a machine arrive damaged. Hopefully they'll get it settled for you quickly. I imagine it will be. It's in no ones best interests to ship damaged equipment to anyone. I personally do not feel this was the case at all. Unfortunately this happens a lot with UPS, regardless of the type or brand of cargo. It is also a fact that UPS employs large number of temporary help for low wages and as Q mentioned, expects a great deal of speed and efficiency out of them. It's difficult to get low paid, temporary workers who are treated less than favorably to do quality work. I've personally known a few ppl who did temp and full time work for them. The temps never had much good to say about UPS in general. In my experience, it's still better than the experiences I've had with FedEx.IMHO of courseLast edited by 7A749; 04-26-2016 at 12:06 PM.Expert Garage Hack....https://www.facebook.com/steven.webber.948

Reply:Fragile, handle with care.Look at about 1:45 to see what they do when the truck gets full and they still have some packages left....

Reply:I have worked at UPS 3 times over the last 15yrs. A "box tosser" aka part time package handler. I worked the preload, 4am to 8am shift, so I loaded the brown trucks for delivery and sorted the yellow belt while loading my 2 trucks in the DSM facility. Alot of the sorting facilities are old and not designed to handle the amount of freight they handle. If there is a jam on a chute or belt alot of boxes get crushed and the boxes look exactly like the pics in this thread. Alot of force being applied. I did unload the semi trailers for a while and I think you had 45mins to unload 3,000 packages of all sizes and up to 75lbs The problem with UPS is the workers are union and the management is non union. There were times when the belt volume is tremendous and you just need an extra set of hands for 5 to 10 mins to keep your belt from backing up. If the belt backs up you have to shut it down which is bad. So if your manager was caught helping out by the union watchdog he/she was written up. Then managment squeezes as much out of the worker as they can which leads to burnout etc. Now you see why it is such a toxic place to work. Brian

Reply:i would still prefer it sent to Home Depot store. my guess is Home Depot has stuff delivered to store by their own trucks and or would reject any badly damaged packages before they ever told the customer it was ready to pickup. no way a major store chain would tolerate massive damage on shipped products..i go to home depot every week or 2. to me it is more convenient picking up at a store than worrying about when delivery or stolen or damaged boxes. to me i would pay extra to have delivered to store but they charge same price
Reply:Yup, UPS certainly took a dive when they made the mistake of joining the mob, uh, Union . . .

Not just boxes; they open the side panel of computers and drop them while filming with high-speed cameras to see how much the internals flex. Packaging can be undamaged and still fail the test on that basis.Dell takes its packaging quite seriously.UPS will damage it, period, even if they have to run over it with the airplane. As a friend of mine--who is an Airbus captain for them--so eloquently put it, you can't spell "stupid" without "U-P-S."
Reply:if they dent & break open sealed 50lbs electrode boxes I'm sure a welder is no match for them.Actually, you might have received the best one they had .
Reply:My Miller 211 came with the frame bent so bad the door fell off. The replacement came with the frame bent to where the door wouldn't open. IOC said they couldn't send another with risk of damage. They refunded all my money and I found one at a local LWS for a few hundred dollars more. Great machine. My Everlast 255 and water cooler came in pristine condition. They go way out of their way with molded foam to protect the welder. Great machine. UPS doesn't care where it came from or where it's going. I had a safe delivered and the corner was bent in.

Reply:I once bought a 12"x 3" round bar of stainless steel ,the guy was puzzled as to how he should ship it , I told him to stick a label on it and send it UPS.They were completely stumped at how they could damage it.But I"ll bet it busted up some stuff.
Reply:My Everlast was packaged very well, and I think they do in fact "have their packaging figured out." UPS is brutal with packages, they will go out of their way to deny your claim, and they ride their employees mercilessly.IAMAW Local 330Airco 300 AC/DC HeliwelderAirco Dip-Pak 200 with Profax spool gunPowr-Kraft AC225Everlast PowerArc 200stBuffalo Forge No.21 drill pressSpeedglas 9100xxAirco, Oxweld, Purox, Victor torchesLincoln Ranger 8
Reply:The units are well packed, with strong boxes and on the end in question (both ends actually), packed with form fitting heavy foam. We've upgraded packaging, each time following recommendations from UPS. There was a thread here or somewhere the other day where someone reported receiving a damaged Miller. We've sent product strapped to pallets, in wood crates etc on LTL too. Nothing will stop a fork on a forklift from going through the box. My local driver delivered a 250EX to my door. He asked me where I wanted to set it. There on the concrete I told him. He proceded to drop the box from shoulder high as the box was tucked under his chin, or fairly close. I told him that I didn't appreciate it in my own way. He shrigged and turned and walked back to his truck and said, UPS didn't need to be in the freight business. Package weighed 65 pounds.Last edited by lugweld; 04-26-2016 at 09:02 PM.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
Reply:A neighbor kid worked as an airline baggage handler one summer. He was a guitar player. He said the the handlers would see who could throw an instrument case the farthest. He would always rush in and move it if he could. I shipped a Tectronix oscilloscope and later a Browning A-Bolt rifle. The scope went Fed-Ex and the rifle was Post Office. I custom made the cardboard containers and used up my stash of various density foam pieces. Pain in the patoot, but they were stout beyond belief. Probably would have easily withstood a 10 foot drop. I can't believe some of the poor packaging used for shipping."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder

Reply:And once again, a bunch of idiots doing the unthinkably stupid because they can hide behind the union . . . instead of being walked out immediately as should be the case for that kind of crap . . .- Tim
Reply:The temp workers UPS largely employs are not Union. Only full timers.Last I knew anyways.Expert Garage Hack....https://www.facebook.com/steven.webber.948
Reply:Most of the problems with damaged items are due to poor packaging. That being said yes UPS is too rough on packages (but so is the post office and Fed Ex). The only temporary workers at UPS are hired for peak season (Christmas to the rest of you). All the permanent hourly workers are union even the part timers who work the pre-load in the morning and the sort in the evening. The part timers may not make a whole lot per hour but they all get medical insurance so in reality they are paid much better than you would think. As far as bad employees "hiding" behind the union people can and do get fired at UPS (both hourly and management) granted the union protection makes it a little harder to terminate an employee. In the cases where a bad employee is still there I can assure you it's because someone is just too lazy too do the work required in terminating an employee. There are certain things that will get you fired at UPS without question or hesitation.Dirk
Reply:The worst delivery I ever saw was on a new refig. The store sent it on the truck with one delivery person and no appliance dolly. He dropped it off the back of the truck bending in the bottom back, slid it over the driveway to the front porch and then tilted it over on the front to push it up the steps, then over the door jam (torn up), twisted it around the floor (damaged floor), then slid it up ten steps to the kitchen (every step damaged plus base boards), then turned it upside down on the top and slid it across the kitchen tile floor. Then he turned it right side up damaging kitchen cabinets and knocking handles off the cabinet and refig doors. Slid it back into the hole between cabinets and tore up the register grill and the window trim next to it. I think he then got mad for no tip and left.
