I can't stand my 17 torch. This was at 200 amps welding my 1/8 aluminum cart. I was welding for 2 minutes lol. Once I get my wp20 hooked up I'm gona through this one out the window doing 70mph
Reply:Nothing like a good water cooled torch....Just a couple welders, big hammers, grinders, and torches.Work will free you.Men in dirty jeans built this country, while men in clean suits have destroyed it. Trump/Carson 2016-2024
Reply:Throw it to me! Mikey like it nice on DC.
Reply:Hey moto - you know that's not 200 amp AC rated right? Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:I think I'm gona cook a steak on this thing before I switch to the 20 torch. Ya a know its a 150 amps 60% duty cycle. You can weld over that just not for long. I have been at 150 amps before for about 4 minutes and it was smokin
Reply:I will be out by the highway...............
Reply:A lot of torches like Weldcrafts may be rated at 60% @ 150 amps, but that's only in DC. On Ac the torch is rated at something like 60% @ 125 amps..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:My old air cooled would start to smell funny just before it got noodly and soft.Love my new water cooled torch!  However I now have a problem of making the cup glow. I had a cup just simply fall apart on me just a couple days ago. But the torch body was cool as a cucumber.12v battery, jumper cables, and a 6013.I only have a facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/pages/VPT/244788508917829
Reply:Go to Wally world in the bike section and grab you some cheap handle bar grips to put on your torch handle. That will cut down on heat to your hand and give you a more aroganomic handle. I got hand cramps before I did mine. Works out pretty well.

Reply:So this is what happens when you push a #17 type torch to failure.I am very easy on the ones I use by comparison. I run them 100 amps or so for maybe 2 minutes at a time, always DC.old Miller spectrum 625 Lincoln SP-135 T, CO2+0.025 wireMiller model 250 and WP-18V torchCraftsman 100amp AC/DC and WP-17V torchCentury 115-004 HF arc stabilizerHome made 4 transformer spot welderHome made alternator welder
Reply:I didn't push it to failure. They can take alot more then 100 amps for two  minutes that's babying it

Reply:I guess you would know. Even with the couple hours under your belt
Reply:Originally Posted by ian1386Fixed that for you.I don't know about your specific torch, but the current Weldcraft WP-17 (or A-150) is only rated for 60% @ 115A with AC...not even the 125A previously mentioned. I can't imagine it lasting much longer if you keep pushing it to 200A. Hopefully the mailman is quick with your wp20!

I was just trying to be helpful by mentioning what the published specs are for a WP-17 using AC, which is the topic at hand.Do what you want with your equipment, I don't care. Personally, I like reading manuals and specifications and using the right tool for the job, which is why you haven't seen me start threads like "I hate this torch because I use it well beyond its capabilities and it gets really hot". I'd take a teeny bit of intelligence over your welding experience any day.The best thing about Welding Web is the easy access to a large number of experienced, knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful people who help even the most inexperienced weekend warrior like me without looking down on them. You are not one of those people.
Reply:Ok children each of you go stand in the corner, NOW. Lol
Reply:I hold my 17 at the base of the handle and have had no more issues with heat after getting used to about 6" of torch out in front of me. Try it moto. Dont worry about bead appearance, that will come later. Put a thin glove on and hold the base of the torch like a pencil and whale on the amperage for a few minutes and voila...no more heat issue. Give it a shot bud.I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:You will like the ck 20 you got from HTP. I had mine going at 310 amps for a while tonight to test out my breaker upgrade. All I can say is WOW. 310 amps is a LOT of freaking heat. And the CK handled it like a champ.Miller Multimatic 255

Reply:I have a CK TL26 (aka 17H) which according to CK is an uprated 17, rated for 200A 100% (AC or DCEN). In 2 years I never had occasion to push it over 150A; has anybody run one of these 17's to the edge?
Reply:do you like the half back more then the button?

Reply:26 torches are definitely bigger than a 17. We use a scratch start 26 with a valve at work. Takes some getting used to, once you get the hang of it game on. Boostjdm: no cooler with your dynasty 280? 26 may be a bit big for intricate work. 20 series is way better.
