Hello,I'm building a dome and have access to a 15 ton hydraulic. Will it be able to crush 1-1/2 inch EMT (OD= 1.75, ID=1.5)?Thanks in advance.
Reply:i didn't think that stuff had near that thick of a wall. . not sure what a dome is, or what your idea of crush is, but 15 ton is quite a bitLast edited by 123weld; 04-29-2016 at 12:15 AM.

Reply:Yeap 5 pound slag hammer and a solid surface and go to town. But with a press you could do about 5 at time with the right attachment.Klutch 220si mig , stick, and dc tigHobart 140 AHP ALPHA 200X 2016Lotos LTP5000DSmith O/P
Reply:Using a hand operated press, one at a time, your estimate of 12 to 24 hours is probably pretty good. If you have the press set up with some kind of fixturing that lets you stick the tube in without needing to eyeball the position and watch as the ram comes down to make sure the tube doesn't move you should be able to do one a minute or maybe a little faster. Since it is unlikely that someone would stand there doing that for 10 hours (600 minutes) non stop I'd go with the 12 to 24.
Reply:So I'm sourcing my tubing and am looking at DOM 1.5" OD, 1.25" ID? How will his crush compared to EMT w the 15 ton press?
Reply:you could probably smash emt with a good bench vise.Lincolin Power Wave 450, Lincoln Powermig 255, Lincoln Pro Mig 140, Lincoln Squarewave Tig 275, Miller Big 40 G(with Hobart Hefty suitcase), Thermal Arc 95S and Esab PCM875 in an already full machine shop.
Reply:I use a 8 ton jack in a small press for flatting schedule 40 pipe . Tonnage no problem but slow process with a jack. When I have a lot to do a brake press makes for quick work.
Reply:Are you just making one of those domes? If you ever plan on doing more, you could possibly look into a Unipunch setup with a custom punch and die. Might even be able to flatten and punch the hole in one operation, though I know stacked punching is usually not recommended. The custom punches and dies aren't as expensive as you would think. It would be something similar that used to make the spear heads on fence posts. 15 tons is more than enough. Do you have an air/hydraulic setup? If you have an air compressor, I would definitely swap out the stock jack with an air/hydraulic one if you don't already have one. you could get one from HF for like $50 I would guess. And I EMT conduit 1.5" OD has a wall thickness of .065". Are you sure you're not thinking of rigid conduit? That has a wall thickness of like .138". If you're looking for a good source, find your local distributor for Allied Tube & Conduit. Mine is in the next state over, but they still deliver for free on their own truck. And I've ordered like 3 lengths of tube from them before!
