Hello and thank you for allowing me to join this forum. I came here hoping for assistance in finding a pouch or bag capable of protecting very hot tools.  I was told by a  welder that such pouches exist but I have not yet been able to find one.The product as described:Able to accept and safely transport super heated tools before they have cooled at all. The plan is to utilize this pouch to transport a dehorning iron. Thanks for your assistance!Blue SkiesJennifer
Reply:Could you please give some more details. How hot, how far do you need to transport it, how long does it need to stay hot ? Mike
Reply:What about a cooler with metal bottom and sides ????
Reply:i don't know of a pouch.     how about a 8-12" long piece of large dia exhaust pipe w/ one end sealed off.      can even hang it off your belt as you walk along the stantions soldering the horns.     i knew some farmers who would wait for the right moon (full i think), and use spider webs to help stop the bleeding.   or maybe some sort of army metal  canteen that meant for your belt, and hack the top off
Reply:There are woven high temp materials that are used to protect against extremely hot materials.  The TIG finger sold on Welding Tips and Tricks is an example of that kind of product, used to protect fingers from the heat of a TIG welding puddle...  Aeroquip makes these kinds of sleeves in larger diameters.  I don't know how thick a dehorning iron is, but that material in the right size would probably do what you are describing.
Reply:A famous coffee thermos I believe used powdered charcoal in between the walls.

Reply:There is a ceramic fiber blanket called kaowool or inswool that is used to line propane forges by knifemakers (I use it). It can be bought in thicknesses up to 2" and maybe more. Buy from Tracey Mickley at Midwest Knifemakers Supply (507) 720-6063.Yo can also buy vermiculite in the gardening section of the big box stores. It is an incredible insulator and can handle steel over 2000 degrees and will hold its temp for quite a long time. Just fill a container with it and nestle your hot steel into the center. The more you have the longer your steel with stay hot. With a cooler full of vermiculite a large piece of steel will be warm after 10-12 hours.
Reply:Thanks for the response! Sorry for the delay I was away from the computer for a few days. What I need is to complete work with the project and be able to load up and leave right away.  So I don't need it to stay hot.  I do however need it to be safe.  This product would be in lieu of needing to wait for the cool down. Heats to over 1400, is 13 inches long with a three inch diameter. Jennifer

Reply:Mr. Moose has a good suggestion, the woven high temperature materials.  I have some, purchased from McMaster Carr.  Vermiculite is another possible insulator, often used by blacksmiths to put hot parts into to cool slowly.   I would suggest a can within a can, the inner can to protect the insulation from damage, both cans to be metal.   I would probably make the outer can large in diameter, to reduce the risk of it falling over.  Alternately, put some weight in the bottom of the outer can.  I would not put a lid on it, as I would want it to cool as I drove down the road.Sculptures in copper and other metalshttp://www.fergusonsculpture.comSyncrowave 200 Millermatic 211Readywelder spoolgunHypertherm 600 plasma cutterThermal Arc GMS300 Victor OA torchHomemade Blacksmith propane forge
Reply:That kaowool is some good (and handy) stuff but, it's not very tolerant of being handle a lot.   It doesn't take much and you've got little pieces of that every where.   And I wouldn't think that all the little airborne fibers and dust off of it would be the best thing to be breathing a whole lot of either.
Reply:Thank you! These ideas are helping. Would still like to find the product that fellow described but from what I am reading I am betting it was custom built. ThanksJennifer
