Reply:That's some topnotch work somebody did there. Good thing the fishplate kept it from falling on some ones head.

Reply:It's pretty bad when you can pull it off by hand.

Reply:Please post pictures of the repair, looks like a lot of gouging and beveling, be curious about the time it takes to repair.

Reply:my .02, it's like the break is located at the weak point and it might be cheaper, better easier to cut few inches farther and out of the high stress points , replace with new steel and bigger fishplate, have fun.
Reply:So will you need to grind and gouge it, or will you scrape it off with a fingernail ?

Reply:Hard to tell from the photos, but it looks like they scabbed on some cast iron to "beef it up". Is that on old Frying Pan?Ok, you pro guys see things with these welds us hobby weldors do not.  Even as a newby, I can see some issues....  For you pro guys comments like "A new level of failure..." you guys really understand and get the meaning.  I don't necessarily get it because I'm not in the business. Please, What I need to hear from you pro's is what exactly are the error/faults/problems with the welds.  That way, I can link your observations to the appropriate photos and make a mental connection and try not to make those same mistakes.I doubt I'll ever weld on something like this, but understanding your comments would really help me.Thanks in advance,I really have no idea what I am doing. Two Shop Cats (not Bobcats...real cats)Miller DialArc 250 AC/DCScratch-Start TIG SetupMIG 175Plasma CutterO/A

Reply:Originally Posted by AKweldshopYou are correct. This is the welding fail of the century...."Oh yeah, I got a guy down the street that can fix it for $200".....Then when the first "repair" didn't hold, they have to pay the real weldors, probably into the thousands to get it done right.
Reply:Yikes that's pretty bad John and I've seen some pretty bad heavy equipment fixes. I wouldn't even air arc that out, I'd cut it 2-3" lower and weld In a whole new piece. Put a good bevel on it, weld a strong back to it to help control warping put a few passes in on one side cut the strong back off, back gouge the other side and weld it out

Reply:Fortealloy, thanks, I think that helps.  everywhere I go my eyes tend to look at welds.  I do know what a bad weld LOOKS (a bad-looking weld) like, but I not always sure that that means it's a bad weld.  That's why I asked for some clarification.I'll never do anything like repair a bucket like that, though.I really have no idea what I am doing. Two Shop Cats (not Bobcats...real cats)Miller DialArc 250 AC/DCScratch-Start TIG SetupMIG 175Plasma CutterO/A

Reply:I can guess the story behind that bucket repair.I'm betting the machine operator was stranded deep in a pit on some remote slope in Alaska, and all he had was some 1/16"  6013 and a set of jumper cables and the machine battery to work with and only 5 gal diesel....Where he then long arc'd thru multi layers of flux cause he had only rocks to chip flux with, and no way to scrape the scales off the fish he caught barehanded to plate it with. The fact he got that bucket reclawed and used it to claw his way up out of that pit and then managed to tank tread it back to pavement speaks lots about his MacGyver DNA.Farmers do the same when they 100 acres away from dinner, the fire and the dog.

Reply:Well at least it looks like the crap welds and **** plates can be scrubbed off with an arcair and a grinder Beveled and re jigged and welded back on the way they should have been to start with ...unless they are FUBAR also but it doesn't look like it from the picsDidn't get enough pen to damage them and where the crappy welds are located will be blown off as it's beveledWhat kind of moron would put 1/4 " fish plates over failed 1" base plate ??
