I bought 2 Strong Arm welding Magnets years ago for £33 each and they are the best Magnets i've ever used, I use them on a daily basis and love them.4" x 3"I can't figure out why they are so expensive in the UK £33 works out at $53.62 Do you guys use magnets at all for your day to day fabrications
Reply:I bought 4 of these the other day.Haven't had a chance to use them yet.www.Markcuda.com"you didn't build that"weldor does have two "E"sOk,I stand corrected, there is a word "Weldor"But,in this day and age, how many frickin'times have you heard a moron use the term(spelling)?
Reply:The ones you called strong arm are much much better than the cheap type like the red ones. also Yours have a off and on mechanism that releases the magnet from whatever you have on it. plus yours are strong and made very accurate.  I've had both kinds and believe me once you use the strong arm you won't be satisfied with the cheap ones Mac
Reply:I have a couple of these.http://store.cyberweld.com/maswmasq.html"MICK"  posted about these and I really like them. Hold well and take up little space.   I have some "BESSEY" angle magnets that hold well. However they do not have the on offfeature.

Reply:Just my experience with the large red magnets, they are convenient to use BUT, if you drop them they go out of alignment as they are held together by rivets.  Just something to be aware of if you use them.  Best  Bob

Reply:I agree that the red magnets are sorta crappy. But if you use them properly, they can actually be very good. When tacking use your layout line to set up the piece, then attach the magnet where the steel leans AWAY from your tack (most of the red magnets have a lean one way or the other), then the tack weld will pull the metal back to somewhere approximating plumb.  Then it's a matter of tweaking with a hammer and opposing tack welds. They don't work too well in corners, but what does?  Tack welds pull same as finish welds, it's all a matter of compensating. The magnet is sort of a last resort when nothing else will work"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:I have a couple of the same strong hand adjust-o magnets. They are great. The red one's are no comparison. Not even worth the $5! I wouldn't take them if they were free! I had banished magnets entirely from the shop until a friend dropped by the adjust-o magnets for me to try.  He had witnessed the banishment of the red magnets months earlier.  I kinda begrudgingly agreed to try them. They are super and worth every penny. I'd buy more but the pair I have is generally enough.Quality tools cost real money. I don't recall but I suspect I paid 5 or 10 bucks apiece for the junked red ones... spending good money on junky tools that your simply going to THROW away is not a wise investment.Slightly OT Rant: A few years ago I needed a bunch of clamps... I bought a couple Bessey and topped them of with a bunch of cheap HF clamps to save money. All these years later... the Bessey clamps function like brand new. The cheap clamps have mostly been thrown away because they've twisted or broken. I'd been much happier in the long run with quality clamps. Every time we purchase cheap... we make it harder for the quality manufactures to complete. What will we do then the only clamps that can be had are from HF?

Reply:I do a lot of fabricating and the fact that i can just push these magnets up against a plate or angle and keep it there 90 degrees before i flick the switch, So much easier than same size Magnet that sticks all over the place, and i can get some pretty acurrate adjustments if i need it tooThis is what my Lovely new magnets look like 4 years down the line looks like i've had my moneys worth If anyone is coming to the UK for a Holiday, Bring us a Case load, Cash waiting for ya   Last edited by Gerry1964; 01-03-2013 at 01:25 PM.
Reply:What I have found that these red magnets are good for is using them as weights for my HF bandsaw!  I made a shelf at 90 degrees to the casting and installed it using the screws that hold the adjustable tensioner for the blade to mount it.  This allows the magnet to lay flat with the casting. The shelf is 3/4" deep, is about 6-7" long, by sliding the magnet left or right it will either add more or less weight to the saw, making the saw cut faster or slower depending on the material being cut.  Best  Bob

Reply:Look  in Strongarms catalog for other magnets they have. They also have a good line of clamps and welding fixtures for example welding two horizontal and one vert. at perfect 90 degrees. A good line of tables also.
