hi there. I have to make a door for a workshop. I want it as secure as possible. on previous door that didn't need as high a level of security I just self tapered on the sheets of galvanised steelthe budget wont stretch to heavy steel that I could weld on. what do you think is the most secure way to hold on flat sheets on a doorthanks alan
Reply:A spot welder may work, but that'll burn off the galvanized and leave a rustable spot.Carriage bolts maybe. Tack weld the nut to the bolt on the inside. IF they can grip the carriage bolt head, the tack weld will keep the nut from unscrewing. If someone wants to break in, they're just going to cut the sheets. A cordless grinder and a zip disk will be noisy but quick. Tin snips would be slower, but quiet.Dynasty200DX w/coolmate1MM210MM VintageESAB miniarc161ltsLincoln AC225Victor O/A, Smith AW1ACutmaster 81IR 2475N7.5FPRage3Jancy USA1019" SBAEAD-200LE
Reply:What sorta frame the sheets be attached to, angle, square tube, wood?Is this an exterior door subject to rain exposure, and do you plan to use galvanized sheet?Last edited by wornoutoldwelder; 03-27-2015 at 07:25 PM.

Reply:if the door is too strong they will break the frame or the wall, they even enter in bank vaults so....get a camera and some movement detection lights.
Reply:If the sheet is sandwhiched inbetween the frame and the door what difference does it make if you can drill out the rivets? I can also take a drill with 5/16 driver and pull a sheet of tin off of any metal building and walk right in.68' redface64' redface78' blackfaceSquarewave 200Trailblazer 302Miller 12vsMillermatic 211Maxstar 150325 Xtreme Victor cut master 52Betenbender shear& brakeScotchman iron workerWellsaw
Reply:If you're on a budget and only defending against the casual miscreant. Maybe some expanded metal welded to the frame and sandwiched between two sheets of plywood. Usually scumbags will go after the hinges and locks first, even if the door is made out of sheetmetal you could open with a swiss army knife can opener or flathead screwdriver. So make sure those spots discourage attempts at forced entry. If you can even disguise the area as even being a door that's a step in the right direction. When it comes to thieves, there's the opportunist that is looking for an open door or unattended item of value left out. They can be defeated by even a cheap combination chain from the dollar store. Then there's the amateur, who's likely doing it for kicks or to support a habit. They might travel with one tool that works half the time, so just having a door that needs extra effort to defeat and they'll go on to easier pickings at your neighbor's place. Then there's the pro and they've cased the joint, taken notes and already know where they're going to fence your hard earned belongings. They don't care about dogs or cameras and it really takes a little extra ingenuity to discourage and defeat them. There's a lot of information here on weldingweb on the subject and I wish it weren't necessary. Read up and research so that you can have the best preparations your resources allow. Good luck!
Reply:Oh, and for the no trespassing sign, the most effective one I saw was in upstate NY. It was an old weathered sheet of plywood nailed to a tree. The lettering was orange spraypaint and the ever s was backwards. To top it all off, it was riddled with bullet holes and some of the bullets were still embedded in the sign.

Reply:I haven't heard of those? Are they expensive? Where can I find them? I'm right around the corner from building my shop, as the slab is just done. I would love to use these on all my wall tin.68' redface64' redface78' blackfaceSquarewave 200Trailblazer 302Miller 12vsMillermatic 211Maxstar 150325 Xtreme Victor cut master 52Betenbender shear& brakeScotchman iron workerWellsaw
