Lets see your Lathes!!! Im kind of on a lathe kick right now. If you feel like sharing some pics for us to see go for it!Here's the story on my Logan.A few months ago i finish up restoring my Logan lathe. I got it out of a 2nd story bowling alley. The place had an elevator luckily, but it was at the front of the building. The lathe was in the back behind the lanes and we had to go in between a lane and wall which was about 1 wide and had 2 steps to get it up. So we had to tear it all down to get it out. It looked like at one time there was a door with an I-beam hanging out where they lifted up machines and parts in the part. It was a very old building though. I wish they still had it. LOL But thanks to my good buddy we got it out. It was missing all the feeder gears for the lead screw but they had another motor to run the lead screw. I just havent put that back on yet. No need for it right now. But it runs good, smooth and straight. Im very happy with it. Its my 1st lathe Ive owned. Im no expert at turning metal but I do know my stuff. I took a few lathe and mill classes. I would love to find a nice mill next! Let me know what you guys think and if you have any tips for these lathes! Thanks I lost all the pics on my phone of us getting it out of the place and the before and during pics too Last edited by jordan_5600; 01-12-2013 at 05:15 PM.Lincoln SA 200 Lincoln Idealarc 300/300 TIG

Reply:There are some really good deals on older larger machines since most machine shops have gone to CNC except repair shops. This one is in prestine condition. Needed a lot of wiping down since stored 20 feet away from a flux core welder. Thank goodness it didn't run much. Only catch is they are discontinued line... no parts. Someone in Europe stockpiles used parts apparently. I am scrounging crops to build a gantry since chuck weighs over 100 pounds. When I was at city hall getting info on garage build the guy at the counter said... "You can go bigger if you want you know... You have a large enough lot"... That was good advice... Obviously a garage kinda guy.

I've had to make a new quadrant, cut gears, rebuild the quick change gearbox several times, added some tooling & such. Reply:There are a couple of guys usually at Gas & Steam Engine Shows that carry all kinds of accessories for lathes and mills for the hobbiest. I had a logan once, stopped asked the guy about gears. He said what model? Opened the cabinet and he had 3 sets all stacked on a threaded rods!
Reply:Sheldon 11x56 overhead flat belt drive. Picked it up about 3 months ago. Great machine, love the powerfeeds (something I never had on my prior lathes). Cuts very smooth, I added a Bison Set-tru chuck to it. I have a couple more set-tru backing plates on the way, then a couple more chucks: Bison 5c collet chuck, Bison 4 jaw independent set-tru, and a Straight Shot Gunsmithing True Bore Alignment system (also mounts to a set-tru backing plate). I was very lucky to find a place that could get me set-tru backing plates in the uncommon 1 3/4x8tpi spindle thread the Sheldon uses.Love this lathe, cuts smooth as butter and leaves a lovely finish.Well, here it is:--Wintermute"No man's knowledge here can go beyond his experience." - John Lockewww.improvised-engineering.comManufacturer Agnostic:Blood----------Sweat---------Tears----|------------------|----------------|----Lincoln Red, Miller Blue, Esab Yellow

Reply:Blue! Actually a nice looking color for a lathe!I took some machining classes back in the early and mid 90's. Finally got my very own atlas 10" lathe around 3-4 years ago. I tore it down right off the bat and cleaned everything up. Later I started painting parts as I rebuilt them. I couldn't get anything done without the lathe anymore. Can't wait to get a mill!Older pic of the lathe. After getting the QCGB rebuilt and bolted on.

Reply:Ahhhh! Some pretty nice iron here!@lotechman, I've always thought the Grazi solution to protecting the ways as interesting if not outright genius.@Rog02, that Craftsman lathe is beautiful. It would be mid 50's at a time when Popular Mechanics was at it's peak and all things making and crafting by the talented or wishful young male homeowner was at it's absolute peak in America. Nothing was beyond reach with a little work and dedication!Totally a different mindset & world then...Matt

Reply:20 Flather & Co lathe that was the Cadillac of the day back in 1917. The company closed at the beginning of the depression. Lathe has large heavy castings and weighs 4200 lbs. I inherited it from my father who picked it up for scrap price in 1972 for $130. Very accurate machine that will cut just about anything. Attached Images

Reply:Started out with a little Logan 12x55 1 HP lathe that had been dropped on its face and was real twisted and worn out, sold it off early last year when my tax return was about to show and bought this guy, 1956 Cincinnati Tray-Top 15x54, 5 HP. Bought on ebay for $1350, trucked it home on a friends trailer, sold off some misc parts that I got with it, many of which didn't fit this lathe (taper attach for a Clausing, chuck mount for an old L&S, Everede boring bar holder/lantern toolpost) and made up about 3/4 of what it cost me to put a descent QCTP on it (Went with a nice used Dorian CA, maybe this tax return I'm going to trade the Dorian CA for a Dorian "Quadra" CA sized post that has attach points on all 4 corners). Changed oil, cleaned up a lot, went thru all the oilers and lines to make sure lube got where it was supposed to, improved the factory coolant system and bought some flex tube to spray it where it needed to go.From here I'd like to get a set of metric gears and quick change plate so I can cut metric threads on it, get some smaller/nicer boring bars and make myself a backsplash guard and a holder for all my quick change tools, one day maybe a VFD.
