Anyone ever had a continental that backfired on occasion? Mine is backfiring if that's what the proper term in. Its not coming out the carb, just out the exhaust.I've pulled off the side cover and the valves are closing all the way.I checked the firing order. It was right.I looked at the rotor cap and didn't see any carbon tracks or cracks. The backfire is random at idle but when welding it seems like its pretty frequent.Any ideas?http://www.facebook.com/groups/sa200weldersCurrent machines:Hobart G600 Powered by 1967 Chrysler LH-318 (Project)Hobart GF-250(Traded)68 Redface81 Blackface

Reply:Run it when it is dark out and check around the plug wires for arcing due to bad insulation. How about a cracked spark plug, Maybe a carb issue, possibly running a little lean. Water in the fuel, condensation will make it cough randomly, not a backfire but a Hicup."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251 Syncrowave 300 30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200 1 short hood SA250 SAM 400
Reply:Figured it out. Some may not believe it, but the magneto was 180 out and the spark plug wires were inserted in the distributor cap the opposite way. They were put in as 1-3-4-2 going counterclockwise. It seemed to idle fine but ran like crap at high idle when welding.I got to hand it to the old lincoln, if I was in a bind, I still would have been able to weld something together with it.These things are legendary.http://www.facebook.com/groups/sa200weldersCurrent machines:Hobart G600 Powered by 1967 Chrysler LH-318 (Project)Hobart GF-250(Traded)68 Redface81 Blackface
Reply:I once put a 6 cylinder Chevy distributor in 180 degrees out.. it WOULD idle !!!... which made it more difficult for me to find the problem...Weldandpower Lincoln 225 AC,DC with Briggs 16hp gas engine.WW2 era Miller TIG.
