Have a Lincoln 220 Amp 220 Volt AC Stick Welder I keep for doing thick or heavy plate repairs. Not sure if this could be used for sheet metal around 22 - 24 - 26 gauge or thinner? Would prefer Looking for a small 110v, possible mig/flux core welder or just a FLUCcore unit that will do thin sheet metal, as posted, work effectively? Not sure if the AC powered HF or similar fluxcore AC 110V 90amp will work as I've had very little success with them for that purpose. Maybe there are other AC fluxcore out there that will be satisfactory. Should I purchase an AC or a DC unit?  Any & all suggestions would very much be appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to help me with this matter as I ponder what direction to go.
Reply:22 ga and thinner is going to be a challenge even with .024 wire and gas. Flux core wire or stick is going to be an effort in frustration as you keep blowing holes in stuff. Fit up will have to be perfect even with small wire and gas.To do this well, you are going to want a decent name brand machine. Inexpensive import units often have erratic wire feeds, and that will just make a difficult job even harder. You can get away with hesitation and wire surging with 14 or 16 ga, but that thin if the wire isn't feeding consistently, you will have a nightmare trying to get even semi good results..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:stick welding those gauges is going to be a trick to do The better way is to pick up a decent mig welder with spot welding capable and the just stitch weld them together.or tig weld themtrailblazer 302thunderbolt ac dc machine Hobart fluxcoreAHP tig 200x 2015
Reply:Without a lot of experience, stick welding below 1/8" can be very frustrating for people.Small migs run out of useable amps above 1/8" material - so having both makes sense.I've used both the small Lincoln and Miller units - they worked excellent on thin material.Definitely do not use flux core on thin material. If you end up with a tig, make sure it has a foot control for thin stuff.  My ESAB 161 does not, but my other ones do.Tig has a very high learning curve.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.

Reply:the last couple weeks i'm welding a lot of 1/4" thick angle lugs to sheet metal approximately 16 gauge. i'm using my maxstar on 110v and 3/32" 6010. before that i used my L-tec mig 130 and nr211 innershield. both work great but the maxstar is easier to carry up flights of stairs. using one or two 25 foot extension cords is tricky knowing just when the breaker is going to blow.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla
Reply:Originally Posted by Birdhunter1Being in the same boat with the same welder I needed a mig to weld thinner material so I bought an Everlast 140E mig welder.  I haven't welded 22-26 gauge but I wouldn't hesitate to try.  I've welder 18 gauge to 1/4" using 75/25 Argon/CO2 and .030 wire and couldn't be happier with it!
