Any Merit Badge Counselors in the group?

My son has transitioned from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts, and the troop is asking for parent involvement and gave "merit badge counselor" as a way to help. Anyone here a merit badge counselor, for welding or anything else? Curious to know how the Boy Scouts determine if you're qualified to be a counselor for the Welding merit badge, for instance.Thanks!

Reply:They have you fill out an application. Then you will be notified once a minimal background check clears. I am not a counselor anymore, but I think you have to renew every 1 or 2 years. Reply:Actually if you have even moderate welding skills the welding merit badge is not too onerous. Jody at weldingtipsandtricks.com has a number of videos on the subject. it seems the scout can do MIG or stick, and has to basically complete 4 tasks: draw initials on a plate with weld bead, complete a 3x3 inch pad of beads, do a lap joint in the horizontal and do a tee joint in the horizontal. You have to be able to provide safety gear for the scout(s) and give them instructions necessary to safely complete the 4 tasks. Weld joints don't need to be perfect. There are videos and resources at Lincoln Electric's website as well. The James F. Lincoln Foundation sells project kits that can be used as the coupons. The kits are like $5 each if you buy in bulk. You get 2 pieces of 1/4 inch plate, 3x3 inches, and 6 pieces of 1/8th inch plate 2x6 inches. The steel is cold rolled steel for the most part, so not much cleaning needed for either SMAW or MIGMiller Multimatic 255
