so im trying to help out a friend, he has a bike frame made from 6065 alliminium, iv told him it will need welding and heat treating for it to be strong but he has been told by a company that an alloy weld left at room temp will natuturally age and harden.is there any truth in this and what strengh is it likely to have?
Reply:I don't believe that is a weldable alloy.
Reply:Yes aluminum will age harden at room temp...Yes it will need heat treatment after welding to get full effect and strength out of the alloy...If left in the as welded condition, it will be significantly weaker than the original base metal even after room temp aging. The HAZ and other areas of the weld will "over age" and loose the ideal properties/temper.Lots of Al alloys that "can't" be welded really can, but no one has the time or facilities/support to do it right. It involves lots of heat treating and special filler metals that are Not "off the shelf".Last edited by Plasma-Head; 03-16-2015 at 07:08 PM.Reason: order of thoughts
