well seems my family gos through alt of soda cans and crushing one at a time is old i was thinking of building something to crush at least 12 at a time with either a lever type crusher or small bottle jack what do you guys think anyone ever build one or something similar any pics ??350P 30A spool gun cut master 51  syncro 250 other stuff " take a dog off the street and make him prosper and he will not bite you sad the same cannot be said for man" i didnt use punctuation just to piss you off
Reply:well as far as the bottle jack is concerned you could probably smash 12 of them one at a time faster than that LOL and as far as a lever is concerned do you realize how much force it would take to do 12 all at once? A nice long lever would do the trick though I suppose. The novelty would be cool though. You could also build a machine that continuously crushes them to how neat would that be?PS: you could also get on a health kick and drink alot more water LOLLast edited by kenklingerman; 12-26-2010 at 12:52 PM.HH187Hobart 500i plasma cutterClark 4.5" GrinderDewalt 14" chop saw30 gallom 1.6 hp compressor10 gallon pressure pot sand blasterlots of hand tools
Reply:yeah i figured the bottle jack would be the slowest unless i got an air jack ive seen some machines but don't wanna get that into it maybe some type of lever will do??350P 30A spool gun cut master 51  syncro 250 other stuff " take a dog off the street and make him prosper and he will not bite you sad the same cannot be said for man" i didnt use punctuation just to piss you off
Reply:Here are two on youtube that I think are cool. You could take both ideas and make one machine.
Reply:
Reply:Just set them all in a line on the dirt and fire up the trusty old D-4, or something bigger if you have it.
Reply:I put them out in the drive and have the kids stomp them and them bag them.  Child labor,  gotta love it.  When they are grown I may have to adopt a few for the chores I need done.
Reply:This is the most refined version I have seen.Last edited by joiseystud; 12-27-2010 at 10:02 AM.
Reply:Last year a friend and I was thinking of making a can crusher using a hydraulic gas powered log splitter, but never got around to doing it. Just an idea!

Reply:Kitchen trash compactors seem to have fallen out of favor around here and occasionally show up for free on Craigslist. They are a bit larger than I'd want to have standing around just to crush cans, and don't have quite the strength to do the job perfectly with a full load, but if cut down in size, might fit the purpose pretty well. Or, if a project is really a secondary goal, then use the motor, controls and screws but build the rest from scratch.

Reply:I hate you guys!!!!!I have to make one of these things, they are tooooo cool. Here is a link my version way down on the cool factor.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=23249joiseystud I too like that machine.forhire that has my attention also.Dave ReberWadsworth Ohio

Reply:A good buddy of mine put together a production (we drink beer) can crusher.  He assembled a hopper that feeds between 2 14" tires.  1 tire is driven by a 1hp electric motor.  Both tires are mounted opposite each other with pillow blocks on shafts.  It crushes lots of beer cans and saves much gas that used to be expended for fuel to go to the dump.  Sometimes the dribble of beer left in the can causes the driven tire to slip.  We were thinking studs or slave the free wheeling tire to the drive tire.  Much to ponder here
Reply:Cool ideas here haha. Im wondering if studs would make the can stick to the tires?

Reply:ive got a 1/3 hp i can take off a lil mini drill press guess ill have to try iy and see and if not go bigger im kinda liking the tube style but with a feeder350P 30A spool gun cut master 51  syncro 250 other stuff " take a dog off the street and make him prosper and he will not bite you sad the same cannot be said for man" i didnt use punctuation just to piss you off
Reply:Here's a couple more ideas:Nothing better than a sledge hammer:Wind powered:This one uses a gear motor:
Reply:This one takes the cake.
Reply:Maybe a compactor is the wrong approach.  How about a shredder?  This must be easier to build. No reciprocating parts required. perhaps a motor from a grinder.  The hopper should be easy to fab,  now what to use for a shredder blade??Last edited by joiseystud; 12-28-2010 at 02:19 PM.Originally Posted by joiseystudMaybe a compactor is the wrong approach.  How about a shredder?  This must be easier to build. Reply:i think a compactor would be cool depending on how much force it  could make and do at a time to make lil bails i just want something faster than doing by hand 350P 30A spool gun cut master 51  syncro 250 other stuff " take a dog off the street and make him prosper and he will not bite you sad the same cannot be said for man" i didnt use punctuation just to piss you off
Reply:I kind of like this one. Where would be the best place to you find a pneumatic cylinder like the one in the clip?Dave ReberWadsworth Ohio

Reply:Thanks I will look into it and post when it is done. On my time scale it will get done when they stop making cans from Al.Dave ReberWadsworth Ohio

Reply:Foxhire I was thinking the same thing.I just called the place joiseystud recomended and he thought this would be the ticket. I'm goinf in the garage and see how much weight one will take.http://www.automationdirect.com/adc/..._Bore/A24060SNDave ReberWadsworth Ohio
Reply:Thats a good price, I always thought they were well over $100. This should be an interesting build. And cheaper than my boots lol.112 psi or 196 psi should be more than enough. That ram will do the job no problemAccording the the spec sheet on that ram...Extend force at 100 psi = 170.0 lb.250 MAX pressure = lots of force if neededLast edited by oxygen454; 12-28-2010 at 05:11 PM.

Reply:That thing might even crush beer bottles lol
Reply:I  just got back from load testing. 90lbs was the max load I could place on a can. Most crushed at a around 70lbs. It was hard to get the weight centered just right (the weights are scrap I welded up for trebuchets so stacking was tough.)Hey it will be a cool science demo. I will have to make it 8th grader proof so Johnny does not get his Giblets smashedDave ReberWadsworth Ohio

Reply:Very true ForhireTotally off topicA cool thing we do at the end of the year is have a contest to make a pair of shoes to walk on an open cartons of eggs. We set the cartons up so the kid has to make several strides on eggs. The one with the fewest broken eggs wins.Dave ReberWadsworth Ohio
Reply:Originally Posted by forhireI can stand on a can and it will support me until the side is pushed in a little, then it collapses. I weigh ~140 Of course I'm not stepping down on the can with any speed.Have your students stand on a can, it should support them easily.

Reply:dang ya got me out in the shop trying to balance on cans they wont take 175 wel probably closer to 180 sumthin with cloths and shoes i aint goin out there neked350P 30A spool gun cut master 51  syncro 250 other stuff " take a dog off the street and make him prosper and he will not bite you sad the same cannot be said for man" i didnt use punctuation just to piss you off
Reply:Spose if you put a small nub on the ram it would take less force to crush the can?  Little nub off to one side.My name's not Jim....
Reply:Another idea is give them a little squeeze to form a dent as you throw them into the machine. That way your breaking down the structural aspect of the can causing an easy collapse. Also if I stand on a can, it collapses with some movement, but, if I jump on it, it collapses quite easily. Seems the faster the force of impact, the easier the squish. Where are the engineers and physics here? lol
Reply:Originally Posted by forhireThat takes walking on egg shells to a whole new level Came home tonight and filmed this training video http://home.lewiscounty.com/~forhire/stand_on_can.wmvNormally I can stand on one until I tap the side and it collapses. Makes a good trick around the shop. Either I'm getting fat or I had too many tools in my pockets. Of course some cans are thicker than others

Reply:I'm thinking i will probably go with this style since i have most the stuff for it  laying around but i would like to actually shorten the arm a bit and make one on the left of the wheel and one on the  right that way it crushes 2 cans with every revolution      [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=um7tkfnOPeY[/ame]350P 30A spool gun cut master 51  syncro 250 other stuff " take a dog off the street and make him prosper and he will not bite you sad the same cannot be said for man" i didnt use punctuation just to piss you off
