So something on the dozer wore through the end of the tensioner cylinder. The mechanic said to make a plate and weld it with some 7018. I was asked to take a look and determine if it was cast iron for sure. I threw it up on the lathe and confirmed it was cast iron and leveled off a spot for a plate. I then cut a circle on the plasma table and tacked it to a scrap of pipe so I could clean it up on the lathe. After the part was sand blasted I started trying to decide if I'd just braze the plate in and tie it to the arms or use some nickel rod around the plate and then build up to the arms with braze. Back and forth in my mind.
Reply:After giving it a bunch of thought I decide to scrap the plate idea entirely and make a threaded plug that I can then braze in when I build up the missing material for the arms. I figured this would ensure the hydraulic forces wouldn't split out the end of the cylinder. I'm sure the plate would have been fine but I had discussed threading it with the owner when I first looked at it and we decided that would be best. A little more work now means less headaches later. Knowing my luck it would have split on the first pump up. I started by making the plug. Thread is 2-3/8-20 RH thread. I then bored the part and threaded it. While I was threading the part it I discovered the grease passage... so I had to remake the plug so it can be cross drilled after it's installed. Over all I think this will work well and should be trouble free.On Monday I'll braze it up. More to come.
Reply:I'd say the bearings in the idler are completely gone and the was ran for a long time until it was caught.
Reply:The threaded plug idea is probably the best way to go. Did you spark test to check if its grey or white iron? I have an old JD50 and a lot of the castings are white iron....no good to weld.PeterEquipment:2  old paws2  eyes (that don't look so good)1  bad back

Reply:I would seal it and call it a day.
Reply:If you threaded it, its not white iron.  But I would still just install the plug with locktite and call it good.
Reply:I would epoxy or locktite the threads and not take a chance heating it if its not needed. I spray welded a broken arm on a tractor spindle and it broke the casting again in the haz. Then I brazed it with same results, some castings are not repairable.PeterEquipment:2  old paws2  eyes (that don't look so good)1  bad back

Reply:I was out at the farm working yesterday and checked out the re-assembled dozer. It pumped up fine without any leaks. It has been working well. I hope painting it the wrong color of yellow doesn't jinx the part. Clearly the idler was the issue as they replaced the entire assembly.
